shopping, found Beretta 9000s

Saw it looking, and trying to decide on a carry gun. Previously, I'd been looking at a .45, and the guy showed me a Taurus. Problem was, he said that they didn't make an ambi safety, which is a must for me, as I shoot pistol left handed. He had the 9000 on the same shelf, so I asked for that, and liked it, save for the short grip, which will be a problem with any carry gun. .40 I've heard good things about, I figured I'd check here for the good, bad, and ugly on the gun before looking to plink money down. The one he had was the DA/SA one. Searching a bit, I saw mention of a DAO, which might be appealing.

another option might be the Mauser M2 made by SIGarms.

They are DAO, available in .40 and .45. The cool thing about the M2 is the safety. Its at the back of the gun on the frame. The mag release is reversible as well.

I must admit I've never fired one of the 9000's, but I've handled a bunch at gun shows. The grip feels, and is very fat. But it doesn't seem to prevent me from getting a good pull on the trigger. However, the safety has been so stiff on every sample that I've handled, that I was afraid I would break it if I tried to put it on. That may be something that can be fixed by breaking it in though.

I have owned and shot both of the 9mm/40s&W versions of this gun in DA/SA. What is up with the Herculian Safety device? A guy could loose a thumb working that thing multiple times a day. I did not like the stiffness of the safety but never considered the DA only version. The DA only version is probably best unless the safety mechanism does "break in" as noted above.

Last year Galyens (now a part of Dick's Sporting Goods chain) was selling 9000s for $299 for DAO models and $319 for SA/DA models. The salesman told me the price was because Beretta was disconintuing the model but a Beretta rep I spoke with recently said they are still making them in small quantities. That could mean they just need to get rid of some inventory. At Galyen's prices I was tempted, but the 9000 just didn't seem to fit my hand very well. At the prices I've been seeing lately, there are a lot of other guns I'd get first.

How was the trigger on the 9000's?
I've handled them at stores and found the trigger pull to be long and the reset to be uncomfortably long.
I'd hate to short-stroke (for lack of a better term) a trigger with that much travel when I need it.

I found the DA pull a bit heavy on the one in the store. And there is a good bit of travel on the SA pull. I was thinking a gun smith could smooth stuff out in there, and "break in" the safety a bit faster. It's certainly an appealing gun.

Dave's was selling it for 425, sounds about right if they're still making them.

I bought a new 9000s in 9mm last year. Paid $300 for it new. Yes, it's got a fat grip. Not that big of a deal for me, I have big hands. My example has turned out to be very accurate. Has been 100% reliable for get-go. Far as I'm concerned, it's a keeper. When the standard capacity mags (12 rounds for 9mm) became available, I bought the first 3 I came across.

i bought one in .40 for my first carry gun... if you don't have long fingers then forget about it... the safety does break in, and the trigger does smooth out, but it'll take a while... i sold mine to a southpaw buddy of mine who carries it everyday...

jeff's shooter supply probally still has some, they've been advertising em forever... [email protected] i paid 429 when it was still in production, and beretta was still trying to sell it...
