The Colt Walker is scheduled to arrive next Thursday. I’m a complete novice regarding black powder. Please help me make a shopping list of things I’ll need to fire a few cylinders through it after delivery, Thanks

#11 percussion caps, powder, be it black or a substitute such as Pyrodex or 777. A flask or some type of powder measure. .454 round balls, cardboard wads or felt wads...these are optional, black powder lube. I would highly recommend staying to light to moderate loads until you get the arbor fixed. You can PM me if you want this fixed, will be happy to explain it further.

Mine came with a nipple wrench, so hopefully you’ll get one. I keep it pretty simple. I use a powder flask, 50 grains of 3f, a wad I treated with a mixture of crisco and beeswax, and 457 ball, and 11 cap. That’s it. I do lube the arbor with a little white lithium grease. Walkers shoot way high out of the box, so the closer you are, the lower you should aim. My understanding is they’re supposed to be on at 100 yards. I’ve never shot mine that far away.

Make sure you read one of the threads here about cleaning a black powder revolver before your dirty it up. Cleaning them is a labor of love and is absolutely essential!

True! And you can make clean up easier and reduce fouling problems by prepping the gun before shooting it. Grease the inside of the frame, the surfaces around the cylinder, and the arbor with a black powder compatible lube, such as Bore Butter, Mobil #1, Ballistol, etc. 90% of the crud will wipe out with a paper towel after shooting is done, making the rest of your cleaning quicker and easier.

Here's what I use to shoot. Not seen is a pound of real blackpowder, a powder measure, a tube of bore butter, and a nipple wrench.
Note move your powder flask away from your shooting area, before you shoot.

I keep everything in an old surplus Romanian ak mag pouch:

45 long, it's important on the Walker and Dragoons especially stuff built by Uberti as they don't believe it's a problem. Pietta fixed the short arbor thing a while back. Pietta is not currently making a replica Walker, not sure about the Dragoons. With the short arbor the frame can stretch when shooting the loads these big guys are designed for, this opens the barrel to cylinder gap and also the pistol basically beats itself up. Most older production Italian Colt replicas need the arbor fixed as well, this does not apply to the Remington 1858 models. As a side note I recently saw a Pietta 1851 Colt Army with a .015 barrel to cylinder gap and the arbor was bottomed. Guess it was fixed too good.
