Short Barreled Rifles. What would you do?

I like the idea of SBS'ing a break action shotgun. I've got an H&R .410 (very similar to the one above) for my stepson that he won't shoot so I've kinda inherited back. Wouldn't mind hacking the barrel down to about 8 inches and taking the stock down to just the pistol grip. Loaded up with one of the .410 personal defense shells, it would make a decent truck gun.

Just not about to spend $200 on a $100 shotgun, even if my state allowed short barrel shotguns/ rifles.

Yup...AZEX. No hassle as I live here in Arizona and they are not far from my daughter's place. I opted to just buy one of the very few uppers he had already built so I could convert it back someday if I wanted to. I had sold my K1 since I just didn't want it anymore and the funds from that easily paid for the upper...about $1K. You can get the mods done for about half that if you ship them your upper. But I didn't mind paying extra for the option of long/short.

I liked your list, by the way. Don't think there is a lot you can shorten on the Storm, but I amwaiting on a Form 4 to pick up my buddy's PS90 and suppressor. Did a Sig556 a while back and plan to Form 1 my Vector 51P as well.

I have two 200's and have been contemplating more seriously about just getting it done on one of them and leaving the other OEM. I am trying to decide if I would rather just have the complete extra upper for the 1K or just mod one of mine for half that.

Whats nice about buying just the upper, is you can do that and put it up for when you want to do the NFA stuff later if desired. Might be good to do all at one time with other cans and SBR's all at once.

Then again, besides the paper work confirmation you have to add the engraving of course. If I recall correctly, the problem I see with switching the upper back & forth, is that you technically are supposed to let the ATF know the new length of the barrel each time you swap it back & forth. But...extra parts is extra parts.

Looks like they have your rifle pictured on their add on GunBroker...

I find the standard 200 a pleasure to shoot but feel it is heavier than I prefer...maybe a tad front heavy. So how is it to shoot short? How is the blast? Do you feel it blinds you? It sure seems the short AR's tend to do that. What is the final barrel length?

KingTiger...nice rig.

Thx.

I also have a very sweet OEM folding VZ-58. (and some Saiga/AK's) I'm not "anti-establishment" or anything but I just don't go with things just because the masses do, nor am I a fan-boy on any one firearm or brand when it comes to anything "black". Which probably explains why I chose specific firearms that happen to be a bit "different". On that note, I have nothing against the AR's per se but just like the DR-200 option better overall...obvioulsy you must too. (Yes people...I get the part an platform interchangeability of AK's & AR's in a SHTF imaginary scenarios, but I'm pretty happy with my choices...after having tried just about everything.)

The PS90 is very cool for its intended application, is smaller (when SBR) than just about anything out there, is reliable and quality...and it strangely really appeals to me. The Storm also just make the most sense for it's application...no compromise in quality. (I also have Beretta side arms.) My only beefs on it is longer barrel (easily fixed), could use a better trigger (Easily fixed...here is a link to high quality us made hammer and trigger: http://sierrapapacx4.com/) and that it is not a folder. (NOT easily fixed).

Barrel of course but a few have also have shortened the stock as well. Again, I wish someone made a replacement stock that was a folder. Here is what mine will eventually look like with the exception that mine is 9mm & mine will be threaded.

The above comments are correct 922 does not apply to NFA it’s OK to thread the barrel on an SBR storm regardless of parts count. The ATF did at one point state that 922 still applied to SBR’d storms but they later retracted that and went back to the original and correct stance that 922 does NOT apply to NFA weapons.
I did not thread mine simply because a good .40 can costs more than I will ever spend on one. So I didn’t bother.
There is a company making 2 US trigger parts for the storm that count for 922 compliance on non-SBR storms. There are also us mags that count as three parts I can’t remember how many parts you need (it’s only 1 or 2). Here’s a link to the US made trigger group.

Here are a few more pics just for the heck of it.

Not quite. Only a 'permanent' change needs to be reported. That isn't very well defined (big surprise...we ARE, after all, dealing with the ATF) so you could probably get away with just pulling the standard upper off when you are not shooting it and be in compliance. And if you decide to keep the original length, you just get rid of the short upper and drop a quick note to the ATF letting them know. They are 'supposed to' delete the record, but the smart money says they probably don't.

I would go with shortening my FNH PS90 to make it into just a P90.

I'm tempted to do that to mine. However if I could only shorten one and I could just snap my fingers and have it done it would be a Saiga 12 without a doubt.

In reality, however, I think I am going to do a MKA 1919 instead of the S12. It should be a less labor intensive and therefor much less expensive job.
