I am going to make a bag rifle. I am going to start with NEF youth rifle and cut the barrel to 16.25. The calibers I am thinking about are 22 hornet or 357 mag. What sighting system would you put on it. I want accuracy and efficiency. I do not care for ghost rings but like peeps. I want to be able to hit a soda can @ 100 yds. What low powered low profile scope/reddot would work. With the barrel @ 16.25 and the short youth stock it should fit in a nice small backpack.

I like the idea. I've been tossing around an idea with an NEF for a while, myself. I'm thinking about using the regular front sight and putting a Williams peep/ghost ring rear. I'm thinking about, maybe .44 mag. Would also put some sort of ammo carrier on the stock. Would make an inexpensive car, take-down rifle.

I started a thread a while back about it - do a search and take a look at the links another member posted. There are some other folks on the Internet doing the same thing and it may give you some ideas.

Neat guns.

Hey Perfessr, good to see you've got your project going forward. Is that a pic of yours? I just got my Williams WGRS from Brownells. It's got interchangable 'peeps' for precise shooting. I also bought a NEF front sight for a 22 hornet-just in case I need a higher front sight. One thing I didn't like about a scope, even a compact one is the hammer extension, and the extra length when taken down for packing. For my Ruger carbine I bought a Millet SP-1 1" red dot sight-it's very nice and compact, mounting low with standard 1" rings- mabey a good choice for the handi. I need to get my barrel sent off to Virgin Valley for chopping.

I plan to do something very similar with my NEF 12ga shotgun...

Too bad I can't cut it to 16 inches though, it's gonna have to be 18 1/2...

just a thought

if you already have the nef, go for it .
if not, i have a simular carb, it is a thompson contender youth carbine with a 16" .44 mag bbl.
a little less work unless thats what you want.

first post, might as well start here. :D

was a regular poster on the now 'closed down' NEF forum.
(check www.graybeardoutdoors.com for a similar NEF forum)

if you want a 357 0r 44 handi, you better hurry.
they've been discontinued.

factory still has some barrels available if you send in your receiver.
