Shot by best friend

I know of two people who have had their dogs step on loaded guns resulting in a discharge. One was my brother. The other was a fellow hometown duckhunter who was shot in the upper thigh and did not survive.

It was a freak thing that will probably never happen that way again.
IF it happened that way at all!
Sorry to be skeptical and cynical all in one instance, but sounds to me that "the dog shot me by knocking off the safety and then pressing the trigger by stepping on the gun" is right up there with, "The dog ate my homework." ;)
Oh well his leg, and if he wants to protect one of his hunting buddies and say "the dog did it", that's his business. I hope he doesn't have to give up hunting over this.

accidentally hit by a blast from his shotgun, which he had left loaded in the bed of his pickup truck.
I am not a fan of strict unloading, or cold ranges, but without question there's no good reason to step out of arm's length of a loaded weapon left laying there. If it's not under your control, it shouldn't be loaded.

Left in the bed of your pickup is not in control, as the subject has demonstrated with help from his dog.

Sad and tragic. Could he have had a moment of forgetfulness and failed to unload that shotgun before he even got near the truck? I find it hard to believe a duck hunter would leave a loaded shotgun in the bed of his truck.

That dog has evil on his mind. Looks like he's planning his next move. I wouldn't trust him either.

That's a cool dog.
Yes, you can see it in his eyes. His name is Turk and he does have a criminal record. He spent 10 days in doggy jail for biting one of my neighbors.
He sleeps in front of my gun safe and he likes cats.

My son takes him when he goes shooting and hunting. But keeps a close eye on him around guns.

Buddy of mine in high school took a shoulder full of bird shot from leaning a loaded shotgun up against the truck. It's been almost 30 years since I took hunters safety, but I still remember them harping on "Never lean a loaded weapon against anything that can move" The guy he was with was on the opposite side of the truck and was climbing up into the cab, the truck jiggled, gun tipped over and discharged. Luckily, he wasn't injured too bad...heck of a scar on his left shoulder/back/arm though.

Why am i not surprised. The hunter failed to unload his shotgun prior to placing same in truck bed.

"Later in the morning, Heckford said ex-lineman Matt Branch was accidentally hit by a blast from his shotgun, which he had left loaded in the bed of his pickup truck."

Isn't the first rule that a firearm be unloaded until ready to use (while hunting)?

nope......it's treat every gun as if it is loaded. From Cornered Cat......
All guns are always loaded. (Treat them so!)

Freak accident...yep. Had to be a gun like a Remington that has the safety on the trigger guard.

That was my first thought too. Cross-bolt safety located on the trigger guard.

While the odds of something like this happening (safety depressed, then trigger manipulated by an animal) are small, I can certainly see how it would be 'possible'. Very sad incident.

The dog did it, no wait a minute, the gun did it. Wait a minute, blame the safety, wait a minute, Blame every one and every body and every thing, but yourself. They use to have a rule to treat every gun as if it were loaded regardless of whether or not it has a safety. My, how things have changed. Let's use this time to bash the gun.

By the way Dick Cheney, was not shot by his best friend, Cheney shot his best friend in the face. And then the Friend apologized to him. Yep, this is a new world we live in.

I only had one drink Offerer.

Cheney left the scene and still got off.

Police chief lost his job because of the attempted cover up and trying to lie about what actually happened. He probably would have been fine if he had reported the incident and been honest. Sometimes the system does actually work!

I too try the one beer a day limit. Works for me. Shooting someone or yourself if not for the rules we follow would is so simple I wonder why we don't have more accidents than we do. We all get boneheaded from time to time. Its good work on good habits, but it only takes on bonehead move and kapow.

I wasn't there, but any rifle or shotgun with a crossbolt safety on the trigger guard makes this type of thing very much possible. Dog steps on side of trigger guard pushing the safety to the fire position and then his claws pull the trigger. I know that I've read numerous reports of this happening to others going back decades. Fortunately most only result in a gun discharge with no injuries.

An Alabama football player shot a finger off in an accident just year ago. The guy is a local GA kid who played for Alabama. I've known his dad since high school.
