I know, I know :(, I grew up in a non shooting family.

I shot the good old Mosing Nagant 91/30 today and I must say I think the gun chose me. I really enjoyed shooting it and now must buy at least 2-12. :)

Oh and I was rather pleased, I know this doesnt sound like anything impressive to most of you experienced shooters out there but it was a big deal to me.
I shot 3 .40 s&w cases sitting on a stand at 50 yards with Mosin iron sights. I was very excited as this was after only the first 20 rounds I've ever shot with a proper rifle. Shot em sequentially.
Just thought I'd share my excitement.

The last rifle I shot I was 13 (I am 27) and it was a heavy .22 at a childrens shoot night in Western NY. I shot very well and will always remember the owner of the range telling me "never stop shooting, you've got real talent".

Besides that I brought my smiths out for some full power fun as well. It was a good day.

Picking off .40 S&W cases at 50 yards with a Mosin is pretty damn good shooting. That guy who told you you've got real talent was probably right. Keep at it.

Thanks! That means a lot.

A couple years ago is when I got back into shooting after 10 years without and I really found a love for s&w revolvers but today I felt I shot better with the rifle than any pistol I've ever shot. I just felt natural with a 75 year old bolt action.

Again, I had a great time and want to do it again tomorrow haha.

Congrats. Be warned, rifles are an addiction like none other.

The 91/30 Mosins are pretty accurate guns, especially for the money. I put a scout scope (a pistol scope mounted in the rear leaf sight) and had some trigger work done (apparently it's pretty easy to do, my gunsmith charges around $60.00 to make the trigger adjustable [it's sweet now] using the original parts.)

If you plan on shooting it much (hey, the ammo is cheap although corrosive so you have to clean the gun soon after shooting) bed the action (so the stock doesn't crack) and get a butt pad (to save your shoulder.)

Hitting .40 cal. cases @ 50 yards is quite impressive. I can't do that with my scoped Mosins.

Thanks again! I thought I'd get the "pppshhh I shot a dime at 400 yards naked in a hail storm" answer from a lot here. Not sure why I guess I was insecure.

I'm surprised and pleased.

I also taught a female friend of mine again today, she is not flinching at all with SA/DA triggers on wither of my S&W. She even shot Buffalo Bore. A good day.

O we have all shot a dime from 400 yards while naked in a hail storm, but you have to cut the new guy some slack. :) Dont worry you will get there with practice.

Congrats!

I remember my first rifle shot was my first gun shot. It was a full load 30-06 in a light hunting rifle. No one warned me of the kick. Thankfully, I'm a big boy. Since then I've shot a lot of rifles and enjoyed it.

Keep at it!

Congrats! That's good shooting. I can't even see .40 brass at 50 yards. I suppose I would have a chance of hitting one if it was taped to the middle of a 6" black dot.

Sure it wasn't the shock wave of the bullet passing by the targets? :)

haha I'm sure.

I have kept only .357 (sold 8 guns) and started reloading for .357 but I fear I have found my destiny. Please, someone talk me out of this lol.

I don't even know who to contact but I think I found my niche. Bolt action iron sights.

(and s&w revolvers, I WILL NEVER GIVE THOSE UP!!!)

22lr; Now be honest with the new guy. The only reason we were naked in a hailstorm shooting dimes at 400 yds. was because we were drunk & thought we were shooting at 600 yds. And don't forget to tell him it also took us all 2 shots (we had to sight in because of the wind).

Sounds like fun. I would be very happy to be hitting .40S&W cases at 50 yards with a Mosin.

:DWelcome! I love my Mosin Nagant also. The first gun I ever purchased for myself was a 1975 Colt "Python", I have alway's wanted one since I think I was 11 or 12 year's old. Due to the price of the gun, I was not able to afford the gun till I was in my 20's. It was however worth the wait! I am sorry for all the people that do not get the opportunity to shoot earlier in life. I started shooting non-air rifle type guns when I was around 11-12 years old and graduated from .22's to .30-30's by the time I was 14. I think the first full size rifle I fired was my grandfather's old Winchester model 70 chambered in .270 Winchester and I was about 16 year's old and you talk about a rush! So enjoy and be safe.

So, you shot three 7/8"x 3/8" casings at 50 yards with iron sights on a Mosin Nagant?

Video, or it didn't happen.

i have always wanted a mosin rifle, but never pulled the trigger on one yet. Id say you have good taste for just getting started. Be careful though, i was just looking at someones collection on this site, he has about elevendbillion of them, the bug can bite hard.

The Mosin bug does bite hard. I bought 4 of them since I shot one for the first time.

.40 cal casing at 50 yards; do not think I could even see one that far!! Best I ever did was knock a empty .22 shell casing off the seat when I had gas but it was much closer.... or maybe it was a windy day that did it? Congrats and glad you had fun.

50 yards is not that far, I can hit a target with my 6" 686 from there.

I could barely see a glint of the case and just eased the trigger slowly once the sights were covering the glint It took me a long time to make each shot. We started with a rock, a deflated balloon and then a .223 case and then the .40 cases.

Haha Sky, when I lived in Albuquerque eating all of that green and red chili I'm sure I could have knocked a whole box of ammo over from my chair :D

Right. it's not that far, but being someone that owns Mosins, I know they ain't tack drivers. If you said that the rifle was scoped, had a bull barrel that was free floating, and a bedded action then I would take your word for it. Until then, video, or it didn't happen.

Well sorry your rifles maybe don't shoot as well as this one or maybe you don't.

I pulled the trigger and 5 people saw a cartridge go flying or a rock explode, even in a spotter scope. So...

No video for you. I'll cry over it for sure.

Where I grew up there is something called benefit of the doubt. Unless someone is known to or is caught lying, cheating, stealing or generally being a bad person, you believe what they say and do as they are good people.

It's not like I'm claiming something that unbelievable.

man this tread kind of took a turn. I used to carry a target in my wallet but then quit when i realized i did not care what the fellow who screwed the whole town over the years thought about my shooting ability. keep shooting and having fun. welcome to the club.

I didn't mean it to take take a turn friend.

I just wanted to share my day of joy, that's all and then the way of the internet came into play and someone said no b/c they think they know better.

Thanks for the encouragement Conrad!
