I traded away my old Colt LW Commander so I was looking for a shooter in .38 Super. The asking prices on the Colts struck me as ridiculous so after asking around a bit I snagged a Rock Island Armory (RIA) in 38 Super for $349 (+$12.90 shipping).

An exact copy of the military 1911A1, it is parkerized and comes with mahogony stocks. I swapped on an old set of ivories I had on hand and it looks OK.

Gave the gun a good once over, looking for flaws. Didn't find any. Finsh was even with no tool marks even on the inside. Trigger is tad heavy, guessing 6 pounds, but breaks clean with no travel or grit. This is a service pistol, afterall, so no major complaint about this.

Tried several mags and different loads at the range. There were no failures to feed, even with the short hollow point loads, but I did experience one "stovepipe" failure to eject. The slide also failed to lock after the last round on two occasions, both with the RIA factory mag. Not perfect, but this is a brand new gun and I always think it takes 500 rounds to let a semi-auto settle in before getting too critical.

For the price I am fairly impressed, so far. Need to work it some more and see if any more malfunctions occur. It shot slightly low and to the left but in all fairness I shoot all fixed-sight guns low and to the left.

Talkling to folks it seems many shooters don't know the RIAs can be had in 38 Super, so now you know. At this point I can make a qualified recommendation for it. I would like to hear from anyone else who has experience with these guns.

Shalom.

Congratulations on your purchase! Just put in an adj. sights and you're good to go. :)
Or if you want to convert it to 9mm (for cheaper practice), just buy a 9mm barrel from Armscor and plink away.

Just have to ask, how much did you sell your Colt? I hope you know enough that you did not trade it for the RIA for a loss or even. :(

Actually, I traded the Colt for this:

The guy threw in a set of genuine stag grips and $200 boot. I sold the stags for $150 so in the end I got the pre-27 made in 1951 and $350 cash for Super Colt. I wanted out of the Commander because I fear alloy frames with hot loads and I load the Super pretty warm. I had (and still have) a Series '70 Gov't Model Super but I like having a pair so I thought I'd give the RIA a try.

Here's a pic of the Colt and the RIA together.

I think you well on your trade.

I have a RIA .45 1911 as well. Mine is the full sized gun. I also find the gun to be quite a nice pistol for the money. The fit and finish are nothing to complain about and the finish wears quite well. I was worried that it would be easy to mar but it is quite tough. Mine shoots well and I am happy with it. It does everything a Colt would do at half the cost. For a pure shooter, it is not a bad way to go. If I were to stake my life on it, I may spend the extra cash and get the Kimber but I am not sure it would be buying any more reliabilty or accuracy.

I don't know if it helps to tell you, but Colt .38 supers in my area costs $650-1200 depending on model and condition. I hope I didn't ruin your day.
Nice guns though.

I was assuming a cash value of $800 for my Colt. I got a 3.5" pre-27 and $350 in trade so if the Smith is worth $450 I did OK. The last couple of these I saw for sale went for $550-$650 so I think I am OK on the deal.
