Shotgun/hunting rifle transport across Canada?

So um... if I have a .30-06 and/or an 870 .. I can still take them across Canada to Alaska? If I've no intention of hunting en route is there still an extra fee/tax to be paid?

And I do need a passport to get over the borders?

Bother...
 
Looks like there are a lot more requirements than I thought on shotguns. I will have to go look into it further and make sure I can take my FN Tactical Police Shotgun

Don't risk anything other than a standard duck hunting shotgun or a standard hunting rifle. They will confiscate anything else. Forget handguns and anything with a funky stock or extra capacity. The best bet is to ship them to an FFL up here if there's any question about their legality in Canada.
