my local gun shop told me that he carries his long guns in his car for protection. he showed me a rifle bag that he places on his back seat. now, is he just trying to be a salesman? or is this a realistic way to conceal a gun in one's car? i seem to have a hard time imagining concealing a shotgun in the car and drawing it within a reasonable speed.

Check your laws first...

In North Carolina, the CCW permit is only good for handguns. Concealment of a longarm within easy reach, accept on your own property (not your car though), is illegal.

Stupid, ain't it? Texas may not be a problem, but do check the laws before you even consider doing such. I would think an 18" PGO shotgun might work reasonably well under the bench seat of pickup. A shorter barrel would work even better, but you'd have to pay a $200-ish tax stamp (can't remember the exact amount.)

Too long to be a hindrance inside a car, but sure is a nice one to have. One should have a CHL and the shotgun as backup.

Was he actually talking about concealing it. I'd be willing to bet he has more of a SHTF situation in mind for that shotty.:)

Kind of hard to deploy a long gun from the back seat if you need it fast. May as well leave it in the trunk. Pick up gun racks are pretty accessible and a police style front rack would work but as a civilian you will run up against the game laws regarding long guns. They generally must remain unloaded otherwise you are considered to be hunting from your vehicle.

I used to keep a sawed off 20 guage down by the driver seat / door. I took it out because the likelyhood of needing that kind of firepower on my way to work is unlikely, I carry a pistol anyway. Plus explaining that ugly gun if I got pulled over would have been interesting. Sure it was legal length, but man was it ugly.
