I have a Stoeger Silverado 12 gauge Double Barrel Coach Gun which I keep for home defense but was wondering if I need to invest in a pump shotgun with light attachment, etc, etc or simply keep it simple with the Coach Gun? I do like its overall shorter length which makes it easy to maneuver and had thought about adding a Galco leather butt cuff to it.
Also, speaking of shell carriers, which is best, nylon or leather?

Welcome aboard.

Lots of folks regard two shots as enough for most civilian confrontations. Others prefer having more rounds on tap.

If all I had was a well used and familiar double shotgun, I'd consider myself well armed.Hopefully it would have ejectors.

But, I have 870s. Even better, IMO.

As for butt cuffs, I've never cared for them. My forearms are a bit oversized and the cuffs catch on them. Sorry.

Speaking more about the Galco leather accessories, would it be a good thing to add their recoil pad along with the 5 shot leather butt cuff for easy access to shells? I notice on the Galco site they also offer a leather barrel shroud.

If there isn't room in the budget for a good 'short - barreled' pump .... you could do a lot worse. Even if you go with the buttstock shell holder .... I'd also recommend a bandoleer. Kept 'right next to' your double, where it's easy to grab. Then you'll have plenty of bang-bang .... they'll usually hold about 25 rounds. That's a lot of buckshot, (with maybe a few 'slug' rds. included, if you should need 'em).
I've always had a fondness for the old side-by-side.

I'd say a short double is more than fine for most genuine HD uses. Unless there are genuine nasties going on in your neighborhood involving gangs of home invaders, you are not too likely to see a protracted firefight. You don't mention whether your gun has ejectors or just extractors- either way, learning to reload it quickly could add to your peace of mind a good bit. I am a fan of having reloads physically located on the shotgun, butt cuffs work for some folks and IMO leather is the best material for them. You mention a barrel shroud too, will Galco add a couple of loops/sets of loops on the bottom of that to hold a couple of reloads too? That might work as well as/in addition to a butt cuff. No matter what you set up, practice with it a lot and get good with it- you will feel better if your skillset is maxed out no matter what hardware you are using.

Actually

that's a 4 shot gun....I used to practice with my dad's SxS...I'd hold 2 shells between the fingers of my left hand...With practice I could get off 4 shots just about as quick as I could with a pump gun....
