I read somewhere that shotgun recoil (12 ga.) may cause the ocular nerve to be detached. Any truth to this?

I have no vision issues... (aside from being slightly near sighted) and actually enjoy shooting the shotgun.

Do I need to worry about prolonged use? (20 rounds of slugs shot per weekend session)

It takes quite significant force to detach or sever an optic nerve. It takes trauma along the likes of a car accident with severe head trauma.

Unless you have an existing diagnosed condition I wouldn't worry about it. I have never heard of this problem, and I have been around shotguns and shotgun shooters for a long time. If you already have retina issues, that's a different matter.
