Hi All,

Long time handgun & Rifle reloader, 1st time shotgun reloader.

I have all the components I need.

Looking on Hodgdon's site.
They don't have any reloading data for me with CCI 209 primers.
Is there any issue with 'em?

2 3/4" Federal Plastic Target Shells
Claybuster WAA20 Replacement Wads
CCI 209 Magnum Primers - didn't realize they sold me magnum primers til just now - Is that an issue?
14.5 gr 700-X (is that a max, or is that exactly what I need?)

From Hodgdon's site ..... 11,700 PSI & 1,200 fps

(and I do have Lyman's shotgun manual)

the 209 is the standard shotgun primer now. In fact, I've never seen 109s for sale in my area.
As for the magnum primers, well, they could cause higher pressures. So if your recipe does not specifically call for 209M primers, I wouldn't use them. You might get lucky and find some recipes that do use the 209Ms in your components though.

Remember, shotgun recipes should be loaded as writ. Substitutions should be avoided. Although standard primers can be interchanged with little or no concern, I wouldn't vary from the recipe at the max loads of the manual.

Most shotgun manuals give you a low velocity load and a high velocity load. You should be ok with any powder charge within that low and high range in order to tune your load to pattern best in your shotgn. Don't go lower, don't go higher.

I'd suggest being a bit careful. Max SAAMI loads for a 20 ga. is 12,000 psi. The load your listing is at 11,700 psi. That close to max I would not be substituting components. You can get a sense by looking at other loads and what various primer substitutions will do to pressures - but this looks to be a high enough pressure load to warrant being very careful.

What I would do is call or email the Hodgdon technical people and tell them exactly what you want to do and see what they say.

Funny thing about loading shotshells - there are no load work ups or pressure signs. You have to follow the recipes. In a rifle the weak link is the primer or the case - in a shotgun it's the bbl or the receiver.

ETA: Many shotshell manuals will show various powder charges for speeds in 50 fps increments. In this case you're at 11,700 psi for 1200 fps. It's likely that the amount of powder required to get to 1250 fps is over max pressure. So there is no higher charge published.
