I am a beginner shotshell loader. I inherited some some equipment, included were some WAA12R wads ( half a bag). I found a 1 1/4 oz load with 37.5grs of blue dot with AA hulls. I just loaded a batch 1 1/14 with RP12 wads with 38 grs. Anyways the WAA12R wad seats lower than the RP12 wads, and the shot cup is shorter. Everything I have read, says the WAA12R wads will accomdate 1 1/4. Is it ok for shot be higher than the shot cup? Maybe my father re-used the WAA12R bag for another wad? Any help will be appreciated. I did look up a picture of this wad on-line, and mine look similar.

Thanks

Yes the WAA12R wad does have shorter shot cup petals and the 1 1/4oz loads will overfill the cup. Just follow published reload data and use the exact components, wads-primer-hull, and you'll be ok. One thing you can do using different wads is check the pattern on paper or cardboard to see which shoots the tightest or widest patterns in your shotgun. Loads that print tighter could be better for longer range shots and wider spreads could be used for shorter shots. I highly recommend the new Lyman 5th Edition Shotshell loading manual. A lot of the pellets will be pushed back into the cup on firing. The WAA12R wad is useful loading heavy 1 3/8 or heavier loads as it does leave more space for shot in the hull. It is also useful for some buckshot loads. I prefer Winchesters WAA12F114 wad for 1 1/4 oz loads in Win hulls.
Lyman 5th Manual says: Win HS or compression formed hull, Winchester 209 primer, Blue Dot powder, WAA12R wad, 1 1/4oz shot,
36 grains Blue Dot---1260 fps--9500 psi
