I have the chance to pick up a Sig P226 w/rail in Stainless that is nickel plated with hogue grips and nightsites. Gun is NIB, 40cal, blue box. Asking $600 ftf.

Seller says it came like this from the factory and has never been fired. My gut feeling is to buy it but i can't find another 226 that is similar to this to compare. Am I missing something here or do I need to go buy this right now?

If it is new in the box and is factory nickel then get it. Ask for the model number on the box and call Sig. They can tell you what the code designates and if it came from the factory as a nickel gun. IIRC it is actually a nickel not NP3 finish by Robar. The difference is a combination of Teflon and nickel on the newer gun. It will wear well as will the older finish. functionally, the difference is that the new finish can be run dry without overly damaging the gun. I would lube it as usual but for car gun use or carry it can be kept dry.

NP3 huh? That would be sweet. I figured any nib p226 with ns for $600 is a no brainer either way. I'm pretty sure I can shoot it and still sell it for a profit if I ever wanted. I was just unsure about the nickel finish, I didn't think Sig did nickel finishes anymore and when they did it wasn't for an extended period of time. Thanks for the info.

I'd say get it too, if it is what it is supposed to be. Even for a blued 226 here NIB it's about 800$.

I'd be a bit cautious as a NIB P226 would be more than $600 - especially with night sites and a nickel finish.

You mention Hogue grips - what kind are these? Panel rubber? Wrap-arounds?

Maybe this is an older Gun of the Month (GOTM) model?

There were no GOTM with a rail. The program was discontinued long before the railed P226. The run of pistols for RSR Group, Inc. were all milled uppers. They made the pistols in P220, P220 Carry, P226 .40/9mm, and P229 .40.

The levers were black, and all pistols came with night sights. The grips were black rubber Hogue. Go get it or tell me where it is. :) I don't even shoot 40 S&W. They are nickel not NP3 but the work was done by Robar.

Here is the pic I just got. I talked to the guy again and he isn't 100% sure about any sort of nickel finish but he is going to check the box. He just remembered it that way from when he bought it. He says it was about $900 when he bought it. It looks a lot like a P226 ST with hogue grips on it to me. I will be able to see it in person later today. Thanks for the help so far.

It is hard to say. P226STs came with black controls but not Hogue Grips. If the grips are stock I would bet it is nickel.

You should be able to tell once you see it. The finishes look very differernt IMHO, Stainless vs Nickel.

Heck, you'll be able to tell if it's a P226ST once you get to hold it - much heavier than the standard models.

Regardless of what model it actually it, the price sounds very good and would be difficult to pass up if you're looking for a gun like that.

Just took it home. It has an aluminum frame, stainless slide, and a satin nickel finish. Still has Sig's packing grease on it, never even been cleaned. The nickel finish definately looks different than stainless. I guess I have just never seen one of these.

I certainly wasn't looking for anything even remotely similar but a new Sig for $600 is tough to turn down.

Be really careful about using certain cleaning fluids on that nickel finish, some of them will strip nickel (Hoppes No. 9, for example).

Looks like you got a great deal! Congrats!

Thanks to all for the advice. I would post a pic but its the exact same gun as Rellascout posted earlier, and that pic is better then anything I can take.

In regards to the nickel finish, I hear CLP is okay for cleaing nickel. Anyone have experience with CLP and nickel finishes? Any other recommendations?

I guess it sounds like a good price.

I just picked up a Sig 229 Elite for $715....::shrugs::
