im shopping around for a new 1911 style pistol, and since i am in massachusetts my options are very slim. i will almost certainly choose a smith & wesson, and i prefer a black look to stainless, although i'm not totally set in that decision. my main problem is that i am trying to do my best to purchase a pistol that i will not really need to modify in order to make it a very reliable and accurate pistol. in this line of thought, i have begun to consider performance center 1911s, and i find the black melonite finished version to be total eye candy, and have heard that smith perf. center guns are second to none in quality in basically every aspect. if the regular s&w production models i am considering will likely run me around $1000, and the perf. center model will run me another $5-600, would i be getting my money's worth in choosing the pc model?

I have three 1911 pistols. The S&W 1911 SC., Les Baer Custom 2 and Taurus PT 1911, If I could keep only one it would be my S&W! Hope that helps in your decision making.

I dont have much experience with the smith 1911s (one day hopefully) but I have a springfield mil spec that I bought used and did a few things to. It has tobe my favorite pistol hands down and has never had any issues. I have only invested ~$550.

You don't need the PC models to get a fine firearm from S&W. The stock run of blued steel, the scandium framed full size and the sc commanders are all great. You can't beat smiths customer service anywhere either. I've owned or do own all of the above and the black PC and the worst problem I had was my PD commander needed a recrown which smith took care of in four days. Didn't cost me a dime. NEVER a malfunction from any of them. Never.
