Should I just bite the bullet and get this AR-10 upper?

Palmetto State Armory Gen 3 upper with 18" barrel. $379.

I have the PSA Gen 2 lower and a bunch of mags for it that I've been sitting on for nearly a year. I even bought some bullets in anticipation of loading up some hunting rounds for it.

The rifle would be built as a hunting rifle with distances from 50 yards to 500 yards that is of reasonable weight and easy to use as a brush gun in the mountains.

I really don't need this rifle. I have suitable elk and deer rifles in .257 Roberts, .30-06, and .30-06 Ackley improved that are more than capable of taking game at reasonable distances. In fact, I only hunt in Idaho, and as a Washington resident the past few years, have only gone on hunts in Idaho with family packing a sidearm and lending support in tracking and packing out game. Will probably be a few years before I move back to Idaho and start hunting again.

So, the rifle would only be a range toy for the next few years.

I've been watching the Daily Deals emails I get from PSA and this upper is occasionally offered at $349 and is normally $359 "on sale". Now it is listed at $379. Perhaps reflecting on the current panic buying atmosphere.

I have no problem buying it now for $379 and having a complete AR-10 for a couple hundred less than my first AR-15.

The issue I'm having is whether or not the upper will meet my needs.

As a range toy, it has to group 1" at 100 yards or else I will deem it a failure. That is with tuned handloads.

It also has to come in at under 10lbs with optics, sling, and loaded 20-round magazine inserted. my current hunting rifle in .30-06 and 3x9 optics is at 9lbs.

Hunting with an AR is considered blasphemy by most in my area, so if I'm going to show up at elk camp with an AR, it dang well better be capable of impressive groups and be rugged and light and handy enough to lug through deep brush and steep mountain sides.

I'd prefer a 16" barrel for less weight and increased handiness, but PSA doesn't offer one, so 18" will have to do.

Any AR-10 gurus on here have any input as to the reality of my goals?

I could forego the idea of a handy mountain gun and go with a longer barrel and 6.5 Creedmoor for long range sniping fun...

But I like the idea of having a rifle with a useful purpose in the real world. My .450 Bushmaster AR-15 with a 16" barrel is good for packing through brush. Ideally, I'd have something just like it, but in a more appropriate caliber like .308 for elk.

But, I have the AR-10 lower, so I need to find an upper to complete the rifle.

For about five years I used an AR for deer. It was .358 WSSM and fit the special deer regulations in our state. It was a fluted heavy barrel

I found it noisy when the sling swivels clanked against the stock, heavy, and significantly more problematic to handle than a sleeker bolt action. An AR-10 would be as bad or worse weight wise

I now use a regular bolt rifle. At the time I thought it would be nifty to use an AR. The shine wore off that dream.

YMMV

I have the Gen 1 version of that upper along with a Gen 1 lower that I put together a few years ago. They are plenty accurate. I used cheap Winchester white box 147Gr FMJ to break the rifle in and even that stuff shot well at 100 yards. Mine did even better once I found a good 168Gr round that it likes. There is a good chance that you will have to try different brands/weights to see what it will shoot the best.

I think expecting sub-moa from a >$400 upper is on the edge of unreasonable. You SHOULD be able to get close with that barrel, but you might not break under 1moa, might not get there with any factory load suitable for hunting, and might have to work a bit to find a handload which gets there with a bullet suitable for hunting. It’s pretty easy to find a 1 MOA rifle out there these days with the appropriate ammo, but it’s not something to be taken for granted. If >1.1moa with factory ammo is a failure, then I’d bet against it. If <1.5moa with handloads is success, I’d have no doubt it’s attainable, maybe <1.25moa.

Equally, coming in under 10lbs even with an 18” lightweight barrel isn’t clear cut. If >10.1lbs is a failure, then, again, I would bet against it. I know my 18” AR-15’s with 15” handguards and optics don’t come in under 10lbs. I do use NM/DCM contour barrels most of the time, adding about a pound of barrel, but running a 15 instead of a 10 saves about that same weight.

I’d personally call PSA and ask the weight standard for that upper.

I have a friend that has one, with FGGM 168gr and 175gr it won't group sub-moa or even moa at 100 yards. I clicked your link and it is showing $479 right now. If it were $379 and you just wanted a plinker with cheap ammo then I'd say go for it. But for sub-moa groups, I don't think it will do what you want it to.

I missed the "under 10 pounds" part when I replied earlier. You will be hard pressed to get any 308 AR under 10 pounds less you go with a light weight 16" barrel and cut as much weight with all the parts.

I have a Gen 2. I recently put an optic on it but haven't made it back to the range to see how it shoots with that. I was happy with the group I was getting with irons. I haven't weighed it, but I don't think it's gonna make the 10# limit.

The AWB will rear its ugly head again, buy anything AR related that you want now while you can cheaply. Now is the time. The sine wave is at the bottom, it will only go up.

Ordered the upper and it should be here Thursday. Paid $499 due to the panic-buying going on. Have all of the components to re-load for it and all of the toys. Just really needed a sling and a scope/mounts. Not putting any other crap on it.

Hoping for 1 MOA with reloads.

Once I get my custom camo job on it and some rounds worked out, will bring it on some hikes this spring to see how it feels in the woods.
