I turn 20 on may 7th, so I still have more then a year until I could walk into a gun store and buy a pistol on my own. I'm really looking to add a pistol to my gun collection. I could probably get my dad to buy "me" one, but would we have to do a FFL transfer to get it in my name after I turn 21?

Or do you guys think I should just wait? Thing is the gun I'm looking at now in a year could be $100 dollars more, just something I have been thinking about.

I think its so stupid that I am able to buy a AR-15 at age 18 and its all good, buy I can't buy a 9mm pistol... sheeesh.

Opinions and thoughts welcomed, please post.

An FFL is only required for transfers across state lines.

You could have your father gift you a pistol bought from a dealer (but if you give him the cash to buy it that's technically a "Straw Purchase" and a felony), or you could buy one yourself from an individual. Or your father could buy himself a gun and you can shoot it.

There is no gun registration in Kansas (so no "getting it in your name").

so...He could technically buy me one for my Birthday and give it to me? And that would be a square deal? I don't see how that works if I'm not allowed by law to buy one from the shop?

Yes, your father can give you a gun for your Birthday (or any other reason).

The only thing you CAN'T do under the law is buy a handgun from a licensed gun dealer (an UNlicensed gun dealer is a criminal). But you can legally OWN a handgun.

Gotta love that logic, you can own something but you can't buy it

Oh, also being under 21 you can't buy handgun ammunition (but you can give someone over 21 the money and they can buy it, there is no "Straw Purchase of Ammunition"). That also depends on the store, if you tell the clerk its for your pistol caliber carbine they can sell it to you (but some places won't even then).

Note that while my profile says Colorado, I was born and raised in Kansas (Wichita) and lived there from 1969 to 2002.

It is illegal to knowingly transfer a firearm with a barrel less than 12 inches to a person under 18 years of age, or to knowingly transfer a firearm to a person who is both addicted to and an unlawful user of a controlled substance, or has been convicted of a felony described in the criminal disposal of firearms statute. A firearm cannot be possessed by a person who is both addicted to and an unlawful user of a controlled substance, or has been convicted of a felony or adjudicated as a juvenile offender, under circumstances described in the criminal possession of a firearm statute. A person less than 18 years of age cannot knowingly possess a firearm with a barrel less than 12 inches except in limited circumstances.

This is from a excerpt from the Kansas state law on the possesion of a handgun by a person under the age of 21. So yes you may posses a handgnu at the age of 20 with no problems. However you may not purchase one or ammo for one. However there are many carbine rifles that fire handgun caliber ammunition. The would not be buying ammo for a handgun now would it.

Thanks for the Info.

Sometimes when I buy ammunition they ask me, "is this for a rifle or a pistol". I mean what if I had a 9mm upper for my AR15 why could I not buy 9mm?!?!?

Anyways thanks again for the info I might really have to start sweet talking my dad :)

I like the look of Springfield armories XD models although I have never shot one, do people say good things about these?

There used to be a gun shop on Tuttle Creek blvd just before Kimball on the east side of the rd. Was a little bit north of Vista. I don't know if he just moved or closed up shop for good. Noticed the place was closed a couple weeks ago when I was in town. I had purchased a couple guns from him when I was living in Manhattan. He always treated me well and seemed to be fair priced. Granted that was 15 years ago.

As I lived in Kansas most of my life 28 of my 40 yrs, most people wont care if you have a handgun, you can pick up the shotgun news and if you see what you want go buy it from a private party.
I like the XDs, a female friend had one and it held a 4" group at 21' free hand with a 2 1/2" barrel. Plenty accurate for CCW.

Lots of people like them, but I'm seeing more and more threads on the various gun forums where folk are complaining about cracking frames (especially in the .45acp).

If you like the XD, take a look at the Smith & Wesson M&P.

Also, a great forum for Kansas-centric gun talk is http://www.ksccw.com

Thanks for the forum link, I'll have to check it out

I think I'd be looking into 9mm, I think it'd get the job done, plus cheaper to practice with.

I got a g23 from my father for my 20th birthday.

In DE I can possess a handgun, OC (anyone can), CCW (after you apply).....yet can't buy my own ammo :(

....and when I'm 21 I'll pick something else out:)...p229? 1911? 92fs? Another Glock? A revolver? We shall see! Depends how well $$$ my summer was! Ha
