Well since the last thread was so popular I thought I would ask another question.

This is for a 45 ACP. It is a Springfield XDc 4" barrel

The speer book says 1.260 for round ball and 1.200 for the hollow point. Well I adjusted my die for the hollow point and it is right on the money. But this puts the round ball @ 1.241. Should I readjust for the round ball or is this going to be OK? I am loading the minimum of power pistol. 7.0 grains the max is close to 8.0 I think.

Thanks again for all the input. It is very helpful.

I think your ok.

I really like my XD45 and have loaded 230 grain XTP's over 7.1 grains power pistol. Great load for two liter water bottles

For the TMJ it is a range of 7.0-8.1 and for the GD-HP it is a range of 6.3-7.4 I am concerned about the TMJ it is sitting at 1.241 instead of the 1.260.

You're using a Speer book...

You really need to have the OAL length to match the load data...at least to start with.

Its not gonna blow your gun up, at least not with Power Pistol...Bullseye may be another story.

It only takes a minute to reset the die...better safe than sorry.

And you can load 230 TMJ's with 6.5 grains of Power Pistol at 1.26" OAL...Thats my wifes practice load. Mine is 7 grains...

I'd set the die to give you a longer OAL with the JHP rather than setting the die to give you a shorter OAL with the FMJ.

Unless your right on the raggerty edge of max charges, that little amount (0.019") is not gonna make huge difference to chamber pressures, in a round the size of 45acp.

There maybe different results a 9mm round, but as long as the bullets are held firmly enough so as they don't get set further in to the case under round chambering conditions and there's no other feeding issues, you really shouldn't have any over pressure problems, if not at maximum powder charge levels.imo.

You won't blow yourself up, but 1.240" with the Speer bullet is a little too short. You may see feeding problems. I don't like seating 230gr JHP that deep. They tend to bulge the brass this way. I'd seat the JHP farther out.

I guess it is normal but I am concerned about damaging my self and or gun. I guess I could live without a hand or two, but I would be :cuss: if something happened to one of my guns.

Speer hollow points (especially the Gold Dot) have a different shape from most other brands and is why Speer recommends 1.20. Also other sources frequently confirm 1.20 for the Gold Dot. In my 1911's couple will not reliabily go into battery or fail to feed if much longer than 1.20

I would go with Speer's guidelines and reset the seating die for the hollow point and the round ball. It does not take long do the the adjustment.

Well I managed to make it to the range tonight and was able to shoot 10 of the gold dots and a few of my others and they fed and shot just as well as the cheapest factories that I have shot. It impacts at the same point and the feed good, no malfunctions. I guess I am happy with them.
