I just bought a Kimber Custom ii with night sites and love the feel of the weapon and especially the look. But I dislike the breakdown process and really like the HK USP .45. I work as an armed security guard and I am allowed to carry my own gun so I am torn between the two .45s. If I trade the Kimber I would only have to pay about $50 to get the HK NIB with night sites. Please let me know what you think. Also, for you who favor the 1911, would you recommend Wilson Combat magazines or Kimber Tac Mags? Thanks guys.

Whats the capacity of the H&K? My 40 is 12 and that is enough of an advantage for me to choose it over one of my Kimbers for most occasions.
As for 1911 mags I have had Wilson, McCormick, Pachmeyer and the Kimber in stock as well as Tac Mag. The Tac Mags are the best I have used. I don't shoot a gazillion rds. a year but have seen total reliability.

You admitted to liking the feel, etc, of the 1911, and have already admittedly thought about accessorizing and personalizing it. If you have a FLGR, then the Kimber's takedown is slightly irritating, but that can be easily fixed with a two-piece setup, I would think. They're all pretty much going to have their quirks.

That being said, from what you've said, I'd say to stick with the 1911. If there's an aspect you do not like, you can change it; after all, with near 100 years of work on 'em, there's a lot of things you can change about them to suit you better.

Before you make a move you might regret, rent or borrow and shoot a USP if you have no trigger time on one. I mean really shoot it, at least 100 rounds to get the feel of it.

I doubt if I would pay extra for the H&K but the ammo advantage of the H&K and Glocks have my 1911s setting in the safe more often.
If the wider grip size is comfortable it might be worth it.

I love my usp 45.
But keep the kimber.
Fullsize usp's can be purchased at pretty nice prices if you're patient.
cheers

keep the Kimber.. the takedown is simple and once done a few times become just as easy as anything else. it would likely be a trade you would regret.

If you are near a shooting range, I encourage you to rent an HK USP and get some time on it.

I own one and it is a vile creature, hard to control in a 40 and surely worse in a 45. It rarely hits where it is aimed.

The Kimbers are extremely nice and fully controllable in live fire. If it doesn't suit you however, you could trade it for my personal choice which is a Glock 23. I recently acquired one and it is rapidly becoming my favorite as a carry weapon.

But I wouldn't give up my Kimber either, since it is so easy to carry.

I guess I will take the other side of the discussion and say go ahead and make the trade if you have gotten some trigger time with the hk. I sold a kimber custom target and traded a pro cdp towards hk guns. I have had hk's in the past and thought I would like the 1911's also. I admit they were fun to shoot at the range and very accurate with great triggers, but I just could not warm up to them as much as my hk's. I grew up with revolvers so the double action first pull on the hk is not a problem for me. I have total faith that if my life was on the line I could trust the hk's, I just did not get that feeling with the 1911. In conclusion, I like the 1911 for a great day at the range but when my butt is on the line I will stick with the hk's. Hope you make the right decision as being comfortable and having complete faith in you firearms is a good feeling.

I love the way the HK feels, shoots and the capacity is a bonus. I still carry my Kimber daily.

The price/quality/beauty of a firearm has nothing to do with my personal decision to trade. I base my decisions on function.

Personally, I have become familiarized and developed the muscle memory of the function of a 1911.

To switch to a DA/SA auto that has a decocker is a complete change of function for me.

This would entail changing my whole development of muscle memory, negating the whole memory. Especially if I then decided that I didn't like how the "new" pistol handled. Then I'd have to redevelop my old muscle memory.

It may be easier for you to get accustomed to different functioning firearms. I, myself, am a slow learner.

Succinctly put, I advise not only taking the price/likeability of the firearm involved in the trade, but your ease of developing muscle memory of its function into account, as well.

Just my 2 cents.

I wouldn't switch guns over a takedown process. It doesn't sound like you're going to be disassembling your gun in a hurry. But I love my USP9, wouldn't do without it.

Why not save up a little cash and buy a used USP45? Then you'd have both and could get rid of the one you don't prefer later. You'll make a much better decision after owning both for a while.

I shoot USPs off all flavors better than my TRP Operator, actaully I have not shot it since I went to HK

you can find nice used USP 45 fullsize for $500-600

I don't know anything about the HK but I like the eye appeal of a 1911 and I do own a Kimber and it runs well with the Wilson Combat mags. I'd keep the Kimber.

Sheriffs in Leon county mostly carry HK, and they hate it. The SWAT and a handfull of others carry the Kimber Custom II in stainless. and they are no complaints at all.... the only complaint from them is all the other officers asking them if they can shoot their gun.

Stick with the Kimber. But then, I hate plastic guns. The photos I've seen of the HK seem to show a lot of plastic.
But then again, as a functional carry item if it's lighter it may make sense, I carry a plastic gun every day.
It is not a treasure to me like my Kimber, Dan Wessons, or Colts though, it's the only gun I own that I don't care about, don't care if the slide rusts or if it falls out of the holster and gets run over by a truck!
It looks to me though like the Kimber is worth more than the HK in the market place, I saw an HK NIB for $850 I think.

You sound like a trade junkie. If so, trade. There is no advantage either way on those two guns as long as they work as designed. Either will sit in your holster just fine on duty. If you like the Kimber keep it. If you just cannot keep yourself from trading it because, well, you can't, then trade it. No real issue here. Really, there is not.

I'd keep the Kimber, I don't care for the feel of the USP.

In my research and experience the best 1911 magazines are Colt Hybrid feed lip 7 round magazines. Brownells carries them.

I love my Kimber Eclipse Custom II. But that USP 45 is a nice piece too. They are just totally different guns. But doesn't the USP cost more? I thought the Kimber on avg costs about $700-800 and the USP $800-900
