Is this the same thing as a "silencer" as seen in movies? How do they work? Also, how does a person get one? Educate me please :)

Suppressors are sometimes referred to as silencers...and yes they are innacurrately represented in movies.

No suppressor completely silences a weapon to the lazer like noise you hear in movies, but suppressed 22 caliber gets about as close as possible to actual attenuation of blast and balsitic crack noise. A suppressed 22 has been describes as sounding like a pellet gun...more often than not, the most noise you will hear is the cycling of the action, and the projectile hitting the target downrange.

calibers such as 9mm can also be suppressed to the point where hearing protection is no longer required, but they are far from quiet. unsuppressed 22 lr out of a rifle has been used to describe the sound of suppressed 9mm.

and similarly, unsuppressed 9mm as a comparison for suppressed 223 caliber. A suppressor will attenuate the sound somewhat, in any range from 27 dB up into the 40 dBs for the larger calibers.

Suppressors are federally legal to own, assuming that your STATE will allow you to own one. Do an internet search for your states laws on Class III weapon ownership.

Class III weapons include machine guns, suppressors, short barreled rifles and short barreled shot guns, and what are considered AOW's...or "any other weapons". AOWs include pen guns, cane guns..etc etc.

Assuming your state will allow you to own one, you must have an ATF form 4 transfer done. This consists of a local Cheif Law enforcement officer signoff on the form...Finger print cards, and a tax fee of 200 dollars. Your FFL will help you fill out the forms, you attach passport photos to the forms...frop them off at your CLEO office for signatures...pick them up after they have been signed, then forward the form 4, the fingerprint cards, and a check for 200 dollars to the ATF. (as a side note, AOW's are only a 5 dollar tax...but the same process applies) (another side note, if you plan to MANUFACTURE a class III weapon, rather than purchase one....such as taking a rifle, and cutting the barrel to less than 16 inches to make an SBR, you must file an ATF form 1...IIRC)

+ or - 90 days later, you will recieve in the mail, the forms back...they will have an ATF STAMP (like a postage stamp for 200 dollars) on the forms, and at that time you can take the paperwork to your FFL and take posession of the class III item.

you must keep that paperwork with you and the item at all times...a good idea is to make several copies and keep them in your wallet, glove box, gun case, etc...so you always have one with you.

The class III item must never be out of your control, meaning if you keep them in a safe, your wife cant have the combo to the safe...because theoretically she could take control of the item outside of your presence. However, allowing a friend to shoot the item at the range is legal, as long as you are in supervision.

Also just FYI, items such as MG's suppressors or short barreled weapons may be referred to as: class III items, title II items, or NFA items. Just in case you hear those terms.

Let me know if you have any other questions and i will do my best to answer them.

you can see the forms at www.titleII.com

dude that is funny.

and the 1911 is slick. might have wanted to poin the other gun the other way just out of safety reasons...a .380 +P FMJ heading at your eye is:eek: :what:

arinvolvo, a short barreled weapon is a rifle or the like under 16"?

Here's mine. Mark 23 with SWR HEMS45. I still haven't gotten to try it outdoors yet. :(

Nice HKs guys!!!

Brick, a rifle with a BARREL of less than 16 inches is considered an SBR.
