Seems to shoot the 168 SMK's pretty well but I have only shot out to 200 so far.. Need to change that soon. My range only has 300 yards.. Need to find a place to stretch out my legs a little, I know this rifle can do it.

dang JD, don't know how I missed this thread. the SPS is a nice rifle. did you get rid of the howa?

I still have the Howa but it's for sale and my dad is selling it to a guy at work it seems.. I picked out the wrong height NightForce rings after being out of the shooting scene for a while and forgot that the 20 MOA base would lift up off the gun..
I have another 700 in .223, the Tactical, but the glass is that cheap Nikko Stirling and I don't really think it's good past 300 with that glass but I still need to shoot it more.

The Howa was a good rifle but it gets really bad copper fouling, and I shoot alot when I do shoot, so the possible new owner is just a hunter..

I am working on some loads for the .308 700 though, not sure what to try next.

This is my .308, built on a Remington 700 action, Krieger 26" 1:10 twist Heavy Varmint barrel, Shilen trigger, Holland bolt handle, Nightforce base, Nightforce 5.5-22X50 glass, Wyatt's bottom metal and Harris bipod wrapped in an HS Precision stock.

This is my .22 built on a Ruger 10/22 receiver and Boyd's Tacticool stock with a Kidd 18" barrel that is completely freefloated. The rest of it is Kidd as well, with the exception of the Vortex PST 6-24X50.

Remington 700 SPS, and Bushmaster BA50.. I shoot the .308 up too 800yds(mainly 600 and below), and the 50 at anything over 300 yards. The scope has changed on the 50, it is now a Bushnell Tactical Elite 4.5-30x50. The Remy has a Vortex Viper HS, Timney trigger and rebedded Hogue stock.

And here is a Savage 30-06 with an older Bushnell 4-12, great shooter too..

chaser, you will love the thunderbeast.

I like it, how far have you shot that .308 out to?

I've taken it out to 1000 a few times, but am limited to anything between 300 and 600 most of the time. I really don't bother shooting it at anything under 200 any longer. It's really a waste of ammo. Since the range where I hang out the most only has 100 yards, I shoot the rimfire most of the time. I also just got access to 200 for the rimfire, which is better practice.

As far as your rifle goes, if money is tight, I wouldn't be so hot to upgrade the stock. I know it feels cheap, but on the SPS models I've shot, the cheap stock gets the job done. Don't mind screw yourself worrying about the stock touching the barrel. Don't get me wrong, a new stock MAY improve your shooting and will likely improve your shooting comfort; but your money may be better spent on a better trigger and (no offense intended) a better scope. When you start really reaching out, you'll come to appreciate the better resolution. When you start dialing a lot, you'll need turrets that are accurate.

For the trigger, you might look into either a Timney or a Shilen. Either can be had for just over $100 and installing them is easy. I went with a Shilen because I just like it better. It's a subjective thing. I do, however, have a Jewel as well that I use when I'm doing benchrest type shooting, although I don't use it much.

Before I do anything I have to get another set of rings as I bought mine too high...

I like the scope for now, and once I prove that I can do better than the scope will allow me to I bet my dad will replace it.. I want to go NightForce.. So if that means I use this one for a while and learn how to shoot better with it then so be it.. But I agree, there is alot better glass available.
The stock is going to be replaced one day.. No rush.

I think I could hit something at 1000.. Not accurately but I think I could hit an IDPA torso a couple times.

I have one place close I can use out to 600yds, getting to or past 1k yds is a longer drive and not always available.

My best LR shooter is the Grendel.

Followed with the N6.

These get used too, mostly in the 400-600 yd range.

This new AR build is proving to be a very good shooter.
