If a person could have just one rifle/shotgun in a post apocalyptic world, what would your choice be?

I'd probably use a flintlock. Lead would be easy enough to scrounge. I can make my own powder. And flint is a common stone where I live.

And you?

Why not a grenade launcher, assuming the 1935 gun laws were gone?

Just because 99% of the people are gone, all knowledge of technology doesn't evaporate. Even if for some odd reason no one sets up a smokeless powder factory, someone will make electric guns, air guns, rocket guns, microwave guns, or something...

If more than 99% of the people are gone, there won't be any muzzleloader enthusiasts alive anyway... how many muzzleloader hobbyists know how to make their own Ebola/flu vaccines? And if someone does have a lab capable of defeating major bioweapons, they aren't going to have any problem making nitrocellulose.

If you want to go back to flintlock times, you need to read Frank Tipler's paper "Large Rotating Cylinders and the Possibility of Global Causality Violation". And you'll need some neutron star material...

I would choose an AK-47 or -74. I wouldn't need it very often for hunting, its primary use would be defense. Personally I value durability and reliability above target grade accuracy.

BTW I would have a GLOCK 19 as my handgun.

It is a scientific fact that the AK-47 will be the only rifle that will function in a post-apocalyptic world. And that you have to be wearing fingerless gloves while operating it.

After the next major world war involving NBC weapons, there will be nothing left but AK47 wielding cockroaches. Hows that for TEOTWAWKI? :D

If I were still around, I'd want an AR15 with a 1/9 twist or Mini14. I figure that if I ever ran out of the ammo I have now, I could scrounge some .223 from someplace in the US, even if it's just 40gr varmint rounds.

Lever gun in .45 Colt. I could load it with black powder and cast my own bullets in the worst case.

Definitely an AK as my prime weapon.

if there is one weapon that will never retire from the world of modern warfare, it's an AK. Even when every gun in the world are laser cannons, there will still be 100 million of them with wooden foregrips.

Hunting will not be a good option for food for very long. Most animals will be hunted to the verge of extinction within a short period of time once food is not readily available in grocery stores. Heck, dog and cat populations will begin to be impacted once people become desperate for food. I say have a plan in place for food, and focus on defense when it comes to firearms.

That was my reasoning as well.

I assume you wrote black powder, because you can make your own. How about those primers? What do you do about those?

12 Ga. most versatile for hunting all sizes of critters to eat, and for defense against all critters wanting to eat you, or those 2 legged ones that just want to rob, rape or kill you. All you have to do is switch ammo depending on what you want it for at the time.

I'd choose whatever I could find, a rock, stick, club, maybe, maybe a gun.

Chances are, if the world is destroyed, any areas with any kind of population density would be destroyed and uninhabitable, ie radiation, biological/chemical...

First thing I would do if I was alive, secure some kind of weapon, and not necessarily a gun, just the first thing that you can find.
After that, start looking for supplies, medical, food etc, and while on this lookout if you see a better weapon, pick it up.
I'd be more worried about finding drinkable water than anything..

combo .22/20ga. O/U. if alone, if with a small group (hopefully) of like-minded then share firearms responsibilitys with carrying various common caliber weapons. one has a .22LR, another a 12 or 20ga, another a .357 or 9mm, another a .308 or '06 and so on.

are yall saying bob barker wasnt right about having your pets spayed or neutered

For myself i want the plastic phaser , and the " beam me up scotty " option . Both are equally possible with a mad max world imho so ill hope for the best .
