SHTF:What's Your Scenario and Solution?

JWarren, no real argument about the Katrina thing. However, I wouldn't live near the coast without having thoroughly read the fine print on my insurance policies. My trailer idea? That's where the guns/jewelry/mementos/documents would be, locked and backed up to the house. :)

I've worked disaster relief on a few hurricanes, years ago, and observed the evacuation patterns for many. Seems to me the best deal is leaving even if it's not truly necessary, after boarding up. Once one is a hundred miles or more from a coast, the remaining storm is mostly annoying, not hazardous.

Watching the Houston evacuation mess before Rita, leaving early is obviously much smarter than joining the hundred-mile parking lot. (Having maps of back roads is a big help.)

But, I'm sorta generalizing, really. There's no "One size fits all." in this.

Cuervo 1800 is a pretty smooth tequila. But all hail Santa Hernandez, the patron saint of Jose Cuervo Gold. 363 days a year, he brings us joy. He's only surpassed by December 25th and October 15th.

"October 15th," you ask? Hey, that's when the new Chevvies come out!

Universal Solution

The no. nine post by Treo is good advise. Once the "lock" has been set, your options have become limited.
The difficulty is percieving the snare before you become entangled.

Other wise:
Remain flexible.
Adapt to the situation.
Overcome when necessary.
Never surrender.
And go with God.

Sure there is, Art. I'm telling you... try Oban highland single-malt. It will fit any palate. :)

For me it would probably be some kind of natural disaster, earthquake maybe, with the power going out. It seems like when the power goes out for any length of time the idiots come out looking to take advantage. It could be some kind of terrorist attack that causes a mass panic, again the idiots come out. For me the first thing would be a sidearm that could be concealed. If the thugs are out causing problems and I had to get some ware I would be carrying a shotgun or one of the Enfields.

Theres a small group of neighbors on our street that would group together and hole up here. We are on well water and have a good generator and some gas to last at least a couple weeks. Same with food, and that gives us a little time to figure out what we need to do if it looks like its not getting better.

My wife is a type 1 diabetic, therefore such insulin-dependent people we can not not flee from a possible refrigerated supply of insulin. Her very high blood sugars might blind (damage feet, hands...) or kill her in a fairly short period of time.

As for an emergency generator goes, I've never been around one (Loews has a household appliance/watt/ or joules checklist).
But knowing that they exhaust normal poisonous gases, can the proper type of (i.e. 25') extension cord connect from the fridge down a hall to the garage, where a generator would be stored?

If so, once we buy some dried food/water etc (buy much more insulin when trouble appears imminent), a fair bit of stored ammo for the new SKS (my 'simple, rugged babe'), Mini 14, 30 and Mosin 44 should help out. Although I can't hit much with the Mosin at 50 yards, these are all 'Babes' (which I hug), with which I 'cheat' on my wife, so to speak :D.

Jeff F: any Mini 14/30 etc would fit in the car pretty well with the SKS as a back-up. Have you considered an LE Jungle Carbine, despite the big recoil? A guy was surprised by a grizzly and after five quick shots stopped it, a few feet away. A customer had one shipped to the same superb store which I use (Brighton Arms in B., TN: a 40 min. drive, but much better than local stores in every way). It felt lightweight, rugged and very handy.

By the way, people would break into pharmacies as quickly as they would WalMart and gun stores, before anything else. Nothing will be left over except soap and shampoo.
What do LA, Katrina and other veterans say about this?
Let's not forget that the murderous LA chaos was partly triggered by a highly-edited, intentionally incomplete CNN video tape of Rodney King-the part AFTER he fought the police. What will happen if somebody attacks a certain well-publicized "Reverend" or other "leaders"? There will be no warning in your area, unless you are outside a city.

I used to consider SHTF scenarios quite often. But then I got old.
If there's a disaster like a tornado I'll just hunker down. If it's total all-out newcler war, well I'll review my options then.

But, I figure I'll defend the house as long as I'm there.
I have a case of my favorite bourbon and a box of my favorite cigars. I have a 45/70, a 12 ga, and a 10/22. I have several 1911s. Ammo is roughly 1K for each HG caliber, 1K .22s, 500 45/70s, 400 for the shotgun. Water, canned goods, radio and other emergency needs.

If I have to leave, I'm screwed. This old body won't hold up very long on the road or in the woods anymore.:(

So I'll expect I'll make sure the flag is flying, and I'll just sit on the porch and have a fine cigar and a glass of Tennessee bourbon with a pistol on my belt, the rifle in the corner, and the shotgun in my lap.;)

If you want to see SHTF in the here and now, all you gotta do is look at what is going on in many parts of Africa.

Does anybody here honestly think it will be one bit different anywhere else (including here) when conditions get that bad?

The old and the sick (that includes morbidly obese) folks die very quickly.

The rest fight against starvation, and every sort of third-world scourge, infestation, and plague.

The "solution" is only in prevention. Once its on you, your chances are poor.

Anything else is not really SHTF.

Hey Ignition, 25' is not that far and if you get an extension cord with 10 gauge wire I think you will be fine.

I have been looking for a jungle carbine for awhile now. Most of the ones I have seen at a few gun shows were either not real or way expensive. I've got a M1 carbine that is short and sweet to carry and my wife likes to shoot.

By the way, people would break into pharmacies as quickly as they would WalMart and gun stores, before anything else. Nothing will be left over except soap and shampoo.

Ignition,

No question about it. By the way... don't overlook the soap and shampoo.

Oddly enough, I found that one of the most useful things I had during Katrina-- and I've written about it a number of times here-- was Baby Wipes.

Not if you're an Ardbeg fan.;)

SHTF gun??? Pfft!
Passport, high limit credit card and a couple of thou in Euros.

Total worldwide collapse of society? Sell short on the tin foil stocks.

Well I hope God holds off on the end of the world, I am very low on Crown Royal and therefore not ready for SHTF.
