I see a lot of guys talking about SHTF. I know the economy isn't great and there certainly is cause for concern, but I think people have watched too many Hollywood productions - too many action movies. I picture most of these SHTF people thinking that they'll be running through the woods or streets with a high-cap pistol on their side, hoards of magazines strapped to their tactical/survival vest, and semi-auto rifle battle rifle, shooting a countless number of evil doers. Do you guys picture yourselves using your home as a makeshift bunker, fighting off waves of thieves and robbers? Do you really think that you are going to put more than 5-10 rounds through any rifle if S really does HTF? In my opinion, this whole SHTF stuff is just a bit too much, overly exaggerated. I'm not buying in to it and think the whole premise is a bit silly. It's a stretch and some people seem to be a little too eager to be in a SHTF scenario.

So many are talking about this, but why? Why are so many people, all of the sudden, enamored with a SHTF scenario and trying to get the perfect SHTF gun?

Disclaimer: Please keep this civil. I am actually curious about this SHTF phenomenon that I see on so many gun boards and look forward to hearing your responses.

I like to prepare myself, cause its fun and makes me feel better. I don't go overboard but I make small preparations. As far as the amount of rounds down range I think your underestimating. Sometimes if you read on these boards enough you think that everyone has an AR or AK but that is simply not true. A lot of people don't even have a gun. I base this on people I know.

So in a true SHTF situation our competition will be limited and I bet I will get off more than 5 or 6 rounds. As far as do I want to be in a SHTF situation, well sometimes I do. I kinda think society as a whole is a little out of whack. I get sick and tired of waking up and rushing to get someplace that I don't even want to go everyday. But I am smart enough to know that I would probably regret that if it ever happened. Still to live on my own with no rules and no need for money does seem a little peaceful.

I agree with you that I think most stuff is over blown but all society crumble. Just a matter of when. Of course natural disaster's can happen anytime but they usually don't result in roving gangs of bandits, save Katrina.

There are enough examples in history to indicate that no status quo is safe, in fact in many countries people are living a SHTF scenario right now. Being prepared for disasters or economic collapse isn't silly, even if some people do try to make it something more.
