I wanted to know more about the SIG 228. I have been looking into getting a new 9mm hammer fired pistol and have narrowed it down to the Beretta Vertec or finding a Sig 228. Can anyone please tell me about the
Sig and how it stacks up again or to the Beretta. What are the pro's and con's of each. I have shot both and like both, both feel good in my hand. So it comes down to quality, reliablilty and over performance of the guns reputation.

Never shot the Beretta, so I can't compare it, but I do have a P228 and I have to say it's a great pistol.

Obviously it's got a great track record, being used by both the military and several Federal agencies. Mine is an older, made in Germany model and it has a great trigger. People complain about the high bore axis, but I've not noticed any difference in recoil versus other lower bore axis guns. You can get 15rd mags from Mec Gar for the Sig, and it's more concealable than the Beretta if that's what you're looking for. It's a bit lighter with the stamped slide and alloy frame, too.

All in all I would highly recommend the P228, many people say it's the best 9mm pistol out there.

I voted for the P228 (not a big surprise  )
I've never shot the Beretta either, but I do have a P228. I bought it new in 1995 and have put a ton of rounds through it without any problems. It was my first Sig and I've been hooked on Sigs since. Sigs quality is second to none.
There are many who say that the P228 is one of the best 9mms ever made. I would agree with that. They are getting a little bit hard to find, but if you look around you should be able to get one.
Good luck with your decision.

Sig P228 is hard to beat for a compact 9mm. Great reliability, outstanding accuracy, good ergonomics, and a good overall design. However, if you like using a high ride hand hold, it may not be for you. A Sig needs a low riding hold because it is thick near the top of the grip. A high ride grip points better, but a low ride is more secure in the hand and is a more universal handhold. Universal handholds can be used on virtually all firearms which makes you more proficient in a wider variety of handguns and reduces the time you need to train to use them.

Your call

...

I can attest to the quality and performance of both guns.

Both are 100% reliable, dependable, accurate, and both will go the distance both in performance, with accuracy.

Both are 2 of the EASIEST guns to disassemble, inspect, clean, and reassemble out there.. bar none.

I say it really comes down to which feels the most natural, point to aim, balance, and the biggest appeal in your hands, and eyes.

You can't go wrong with either gun IMHO.

Out of the three, go with the SIG.

IMO, the SIG P-228 has better fit & finish, is more accurate, is more reliable and points better than the Beretta Model 92 series and Sprigfield XD series.

Sig, of course. I would probably go for a 229 rather than 228. Primarily b/c 228 in good condition are a bit difficult to come by, let alone NIB. I enjoy the rust resistance of the stainless slides. Most who own both 229 & 228 will tell you that the 228 has better balance.

You do realize that 2 of the guns that you list are discontinued models, right? The Beretta Vertec is gone. The 228 is either gone or no longer imported by SigArms depending upon who you talk to. Limited runs of 228s will likely continue for large contracts, so some contract overrun pistols will be available for a while.

As far as the qualities that you cite as important, the Vertec and 228 are about equal in my view. I think you'll have to get what you feel is best. I'd go with the 228 b/c it's a better all around. Good for carry, good for range. The Beretta might be a little harder to carry due to the size of the gun.

I've only shot the Vertec a few times -- I prefer the tradition fs configuration. I'm also not a SIG fan but, after a recent comment to that effect at work, one of the guys is trying to convince me the error of my ways and he's using his dad's 228 as my temptress  From what I have noticed about the 228, it does have a very natural grip & is a natural pointer...further investigation is to follow ;)
So, short story long, I might go w/ the 228 on this one

I have a German made P228. The trigger is awesome--light and crisp. It is stone cold reliable. Get MecGar mags as others have said and you have a 15 + 1 gun. Only weak spot is the finish (compared to Glocks, anyway, they rust a little easier if you don't wipe them down). I have seen two tones (nickled slides), of course, this wasn't until I bought my blued one. I'd never sell my 228.

I am actually a little offended you would put the other two in a category with this Sig p228. This is the 2nd best 9mm ever made after the Glock 19 of course. The Sig p228 is a masterpeice. It is one of the smoothest shooting guns ever and you can not get them new any more. This is one I will never get rid of. Don't sell yourself short for "eXaggerated Dreams".

Absolutely, the best balanced handgun directly from the box; making it my
first choice for a double-stack 9m/m handgun. First introduced in 1989, the
West German versions are gett'in more scarce by each passing day. Mine
is a 1990 (KA date code), and may very well have been among the first to
be imported into Herndon, VA~? West German SIG-SAUER handguns spell
QUALITY; no doubt 'bout it~! ;):D

I voted Sig P228 and I do own one. However, for a compact 9MM I prefer the CZ-75D PCR. Fits nicely in a Sig P228 holster. Its actually a little slimmer and smaller than the Sig, bu not by much.

The 228 has been officially discontinued by Sig as of 9/26/2007,
I got in and sold the last of those beauties that I'll see last week.
I just tried to re-order and couldn't.
If you see them NIB, now is the time to grab them.

^^ The P226 is Sig's full sized frame with a double-stack magazine. The P228 (or currently made P229) is their mid-sized frame also with a double stack.

The P225 is a compact single stack frame that is no longer made. This was not based off the P226, but of the P220 frame which is famous for being in .45, but was also made in 9MM for a time. The P239 is the current replacement for P225.
