i love my sig 556 but i cannot seem to get the thing zeroed with the diopter sight. it's all over the place, and the crazy thing is that wolf ammo groups the best. i'm thinking about an acog for it. hopefully i can get it zeroed with an optic. has anyone else had issues with sighting in this rifle. i have the classic. i've used 55gr up to the heavier bullets. no joy. i'm on the paper but not where it should be.
sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread and go off on a tangent.

That's been my experience with my Patrol SIG 556 and the diopter. It's a nice design in theory but the reality is not so great.
I have an Aurora sight that I intend to put on my Sig if I can't get the dumb diopter to play nice.

Over at a Sig forum I visit, the general concensus is that the rifles are nice but the Sig diopter (made by !tac) are below par. Some members use stronger language.

Both the diopter sight and mini red dot are both iTac products with Sig's name on them. They are what they are, some people have good luck with them and others have had some bad experiences.

IMO I certainly wouldn't run out and spend $200 on either the mini red dot or the rear diopter sight, however if I can get a brand new Sig 556 for under $1k and both those sights are included in the deal then I certainly won't complain.

When I had my first Sig 556 I really wanted a diopter sight and the iTac one hadn't come out yet so I was going to buy the Aurora one that had just come out. I read a few negative things here and there about the Aurora sight but I liked the fact it was an exact replica of the classic Sig 55X sight.

I've had my eye on the Sig 556 classic for a while, but now maybe the lowered pricing might push me over the fence. I like big heavy clunky rifles :)

Form what I've read (including the Sig thread linked above) accuracy seems not too bad as a battle rifle. But I'd hope for better for the price, especially since this is not "mil surp" per se.

I was looking at the Sig 516 as well, but that isn't doing much for me...

I was certainly not looking for pinpoint accuracy when I chose the sig, I am looking to be able to hit at 100m and under. I think it will do fine.

The accuracy on these doesn't seem the best... See here:

Again I would point out that the Sig 55x line of rifles were designed to be battle rifles and have served the Swiss well for decades. While they may not be precision rifles they are accurate enough to be minute of enemy at respectable distances. The Sig 556 may have a redesigned lower but the upper is still basically the same as the upper on any of the other Sig 55x rifles (550, 551) so I would expect that the accuracy of the 556 to be about the same as the military models.

The Sig 556 is not as accurate as your typical AR and probably a little more accurate than your typical AK, if you can live with that then you will enjoy shooting this rifle. If you want a precision rifle then there are better options out there but IMO people who buy Sig 556's and AK's are not buying them because they are impressively accurate.

Picked mine up a few minutes ago and it is indeed the Classic SWAT. I'm a happy camper. Everything appears to be in good condition and no obvious issues. I won't get to shoot it until next Monday, though. It is definitely not a light gun, that's for sure. Especially with two full magazines attached to it. The case was blue, which I actually wanted. I know it's kinda an ugly color, but it definitely says SIG inside without even having to read it.
No pictures yet because my camera mysteriously disappeared... that's common around these parts unfortunately and usually has something to do with my granddaughter doing something cute.

To go along with Nwilliams comments. It behooves a buyer to think about how they are going to use that rifle. Let us say arguendo that the rifle will be a 2.5 MOA rifle (5 shot groups). That is not a stunningly accurate weapon but whether it is accurate enough depends on purposes. I stated earlier that I purchased a Noveske upper. I will shocked if when I put it through its paces it cannot shoot sub MOA.

My Novekse upper meant for a rifle built to be a fighting gun. It is nice to have the accuracy but from field positions with a 4 MOA red dot on it I doubt I can shoot better than 2.5 MOA. Furthermore I am not running match ammo through my guns all the time so I do not think I should compare what I expect them to do under those conditions with a bench rested gun, single loaded one match grade round at a time.

My saiga's shooting wolf easily make COM shots inside of 200 yards. All other things being equal I'd just as soon have a very accurate gun as not. A fighting rifle that shoots 2.5 MOA should get the job done. Of course if I paid $1700 for it I'd be a little bugged that it couldn't out shoot my converted saiga that I'm into about $350. For $971 I'd still be a little bugged but not as much.

Ive been working on one

I bought a couple of weeks ago.

I'm happy with it, that being said the rear sight took some getting used to. The trick seems to be a liberal amount of blue locktite to keep it tight on your rail and then sight it in. It isnt very difficult and what really impressed me was the gas system.
556gaspiston001.jpg
as you can see it did its job.

A good share of that would have ended up on the bolt on a D.I. AR.
If it continues to operate like it has so far I will be happy to keep it. Having worked with M240's I appreciate what the gas system can do and how long it will keep operating though very dirty.
I see it as best of both AR/Kalishnikov compromise. I knew it was not going to be top of the line AR accurate; but I was resonabbly sure it was going to better than my AK and it has been.
I too went to the Sig 556 Owners board and took a look. Most of the defects were on older guns and I was then and am now confident that Sig has worked most of this out. (In fact some of the complaints in my opinion were non-issues made by less than experianced shooters. Some of these bordered on silly in my opinion.)
I still have a hundred or so rounds loaded and intend on shooting again this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes.

Put nearly 100 rounds of steel Monarch ammo through mine today and it was flawless. I used all three SIG magazines too and there were no issues. The 556 is like a really deadly BB gun as far as recoil and it made my AK feel a lot lighter than normal. The weight is really the only issue I had. The trigger is really nice too. The diopter scope thing isn't exactly ideal, though. I'm going to get a red dot some day to replace it, but until then I guess I'll figure out how to adjust that thing.

Took mine out today and put a hundred rounds through it. I picked up a couple of those hundred round value packs of Federal that Wally World sells and darted off to the range while I still had some daylight. My only complaint is that I only had time enough to shoot off a hundred rounds but I had no malfunctions.

I almost placed an order a few minutes ago, but then had a second thought. What hole does this rifle fill... I have a bunch of EBRs already, including 4 ARs, 4 AKs and an HK clone. Anyone have any thoughts on the Sig 556 as to why it might be "special".

I wouldn't see a hole it would fill in your arsenal as it is. If it were me, I'd take that money, buy a Sig 522 and a S&W M&P15-22 and have a blast.

It's not that the Sig 556 is special, it's just something different.

For me personally I don't particularity care for having multiples of the same gun platform, I guess I just like variety. The Sig 556 is just something different to have in the collection. Of course I've always wanted to own a Sig 55x platform rifle and so owning a Sig 556 is as close as I can come to achieving that dream.

Here's another pic of mine....

I am SERIOUSLY thinking about ordering one of these this weeks.

I have 3 main questions for you guys that just bought the 556 Classic from Bud's for $971.00

The first is what all did it come with? (Red dot, diopiter sight and one mag?)

Are the sights "good enough" for less than 100yard work or do I still need to plan on buying another optic?

Last and probably most important, I shoot lefty. I know the selector is ambidextrous BUT the mag release is right hand only right? How hard is it to change the magazine when shooting lefthanded? (The button is very close to the trigger guard and looks like it MAY be hard to change a magazine for a lefty.)

Thank you.

Sadly Bud's no longer has the model that I purchased on their website. The model number on mine was "SIG556304" and it was described as "Sig Sauer 30 + 1 5.56 Rifle 17" Barrel/Adjustable Sights Fol" It came exactly as I showed in the pictures in post #47

I paid $971 plus $29.13 for something they referred to as "no cash discount" so in the end my grand total was $1010.13.

Unfortunately Bud's no longer lists this model on their website and the closest thing they have is the one listed as "Model: R55616BCMRRD" however the price is back up to $1,700!

Seeing this makes me really glad I ordered mine when I did!!!!

The only model they have that is still $971 is the one listed as "Model: SIG556303" however as far as I can tell this model comes with green furniture and no red dot or diopter sight. It's still a great price and if I hadn't purchased the one I did that one would have been my second choice.

The mag release is right side only on my Classic SWAT. Not sure if that's the same for all 556s, but I'd be willing to bet it is..

ive had a 556 for a year or so, i paid 1100 & i thought that was a bargain . it has very little recoil & muzzle rise.i added a muzzle brake which makes recoil even less. its very smooth in operation.with a foward grip its very comfortable to shoot. look at all the crazy prices for these guns & similar ones on GB for 1500 to 2500,it makes getting a sig a real bargain at this price...

Incidentally, should Bud's supply of these dry up, Cheaper Than Dirt is selling 556s for ~$970, as well.
