SIG, I think the top rails are now being put on straight, and the hand guards that should have originally been on the rifle will be available ‘real soon‘ now. Should be a pretty good rifle once they get it together. ???. I know several folks happy with theirs.
What new handguards?

If so, that's what I ordered.

I could be wrong, but the Commando Carbine is supposedly limited to a run of 1,000.

I am considering the purchase of a 556 commando. At $1,400 it is steep. Any word on the Bushmaster ACR price and release date? I want this to be an all round HD and survival rifle. Would the 556 be reliable enough? How abotu part availability?

Heck, at $1400, I might order yet another Commando Carbine, but the gun store from which I purchased it is out of stock!

BTW, what optics do folks here recommend for the SIG 556?

Eotech? Aimpoint? Acog?

This would be my "warrior prince" fantasy gun.

Before you chose your optic, YOU have to decide how and what you plan your carbine for.

Be realistic, about your capabilities, what you are willing to spend, and what you REALLY are going to use your carbine for.

There are trade offs, NO optic does it all.

The best review of carbine optics, by a real operator, I found here. (The same article was also on ARFCOM by the same poster)

Good luck

That was a great review, thank you.

As I put before, it's my "warrior prince" fantasy gun. Hence my requirements are fungible.

Having said that, if I ever use the rifle for a serious purpose, it will be CQB, so the reviewer's recommendation for Aimpoint makes perfect sense to me.

BTW, what is the best way to tell whether my SIG 556 has a canted rail? When I look at the top rail with the stock folded, the rail looks ever so slightly canted. But perhaps my eyes (and my brain full of "canted rail" SIG 556 stories on the web) are playing tricks on me, so I'd like to know an accurate way to measure whether or not the rail is mounted true.

Don't worry about canted rails if the serial number is above 3000 or so (basically, the first month or two of production). None of the Commandos (all with serials above 10k or so), to the best of my knowledge, have been reported to have canted rails.

I Don't know, I don't own one. I Have shot a few, but I don't know how the SIG folks can tell. I presume they find out when they can't sight in their optics. Maybe their BUIS too.

I would look over at SIGForum.com Good folks, informative, and they are usually happy to help.

Good luck.

Well, that makes me feel better, but I read a review from another forum recently in which a buyer of a "mid 10000" serial number had trouble zeroing the rifle and found that he had a canted rail.

I guess I should find out soon enough when I zero the BUIS and mount an Aimpoint.

In any case, Sigarms offers a lifetime warranty, so I should be okay in the end. I just hope the rail is straight and doesn't cause me the hassle.

Would dryfiring the SIG 556 without snapcaps cause any additional damage to the rifle?

Probably not. But to be safe, always use a snap cap to protect the firing pin. The Snap Cap also makes you check that chamber again too. Never a bad thing.

Good luck.
