I carried a Sig 239 for over 5 years. There were times where dressing around the gun was an inconvenience. I picked up a Ruger LCP Custom and pocket carried it for over a year. A .380 is absolutely the smallest semi-auto self defense round I will carry and the LCP is not fun to shoot so I began looking for an "in between" option. I found a brand new, in the box 938 Extreme with one 6 round magazine and two 7 round magazines for $540 last weekend so I took the plunge. I left the pawn shop and went straight to the range. Below are my thoughts.

It groups well, the gun is capable of much better accuracy than I can produce. It is very thin. Thin is great for concealablility but I can't get my normal two handed grip on it. This doesn't seem to deter accuracy or shoot-ability but it is different than I am used to. The Extreme has the G-10 grips. All the grip surfaces are fairly aggressive and unless you have labor hardened hands you will feel the aggressiveness of the grip surfaces when you shoot it. Recoil is very manageable, it even feels softer than the LCP. Because of the short grip length I pinched my palm and one finger several times while aggressively and quickly seating a magazine in a simulated combat reload. The finger pinch drew blood. My XDM 3.8 Compact does the same thing in my hands.

The night sights are bright but I think I would prefer XS Big Dot sights and may put a set on this gun.

I initially failed at field stripping the gun. I had to resort to the manual to see exactly where to position the slide to enable the slide stop to be pushed out.

The package came with a kydex belt clip holster. While that is thoughtful of Sig, the bulk of the overall dimensions of the holster push the gun much further away from the body than its small size should require. I prefer OWB carry in a leather holster with a vertical draw but after reviewing multiple holster manufacturer's sites I may end up carrying this gun inside the waistband. Most of the OWB options came with a cant and looked overly bulky for such a small gun.

I've never carried cocked and locked so that is going to take some getting used to. I'm confident the gun won't fire without direct action and the 8lb trigger pull provides added confidence in that arena but I would have been thrilled if Sig offered a pistol with these dimensions in a hammer fired DAO option. Hello Sig, are you listening?

I am considering buying a threaded barrel. Not because I plan on running a suppressor but because it adds another 1/2 inch to the barrel length and might come in handy in a contact distance scenario. That protruding barrel might keep the slide from being pushed out of battery if you catch my drift.

Overall I am pleased with the purchase. I will need to run several more boxes of ammo through it and get removing the safety ingrained into my draw stroke but I think this gun will fill the bill for that "in between" option I was looking for. And no, I didn't consider a striker fired, no safety, option.

I have found my experience the same. Add in the magazines are difficult to load, a mag loader is helpful when shooting more than few at the range.

As for holsters mine have been the injection molded ones shipped with the gun, the second I ordered left hand but wear right handed, under the belt. It offered the best fit and didn't dangle off the way most OWB holsters seem to adopt in the long run. Being stiff enough it doesn't collapse after the draw. The 938 is small enough it doesn't print or get exposed with a cover garment and I've had no issues with revealing it to get to a wallet in the back pocket. As part of that overall security plan, tho - I quit carrying the wallet in the back. It's now in the left front, minimalist, and that has worked better than ever. It does takes some getting used to if you have carried in back over 40 years, but I don't often check my back pocket any more for a wallet, which is a tell for it. Less motion around a belted gun is good. Less sitting on a brick of plastic is even better.

Another holster I use is a neoprene shoulder holster convertible to wear appendix. As a carry method I find it cooler in hot weather than appendix by a wide margin. I've worn it under a camp shirt next to the skin and while it does get moist it's relatively comfortable compared to the blanket of heat trapped under the belt line. If I were to consider a below the belt appendix carry holster I would want it as breathable as possible - like football jersey material. Not neoprene and not even 4 inches wide. Having worn the shoulder holster on vacation traveling to the coast by car and then walking the beach, I consider it a better method than belt or pocket for those situations. Even restaurants are better handled than trapping a gun behind you at 4:00.

As for a DAO I eventually did go there, a Kahr CW380. In polymer with less to rust, best DA trigger consistently made, and shoots comfortably, somewhat more so than the G10 on the P938. And the mags reload much much easier, which makes going thru a box of 50 a delight. So, the P938 doesn't get as much range time, considering I got a S&W 4566 to play with, too. Of the three, the P938 is slightly snappier than the others, but nothing like the first gen LCP. That mistake went down the road.

Perhaps you missed my post in another recent thread about the P-938 (I also carry an Extreme). Note the Kramer Belt Scabbard OWB holster, an exceptionally close-fitting pancake rig in horsehide that is easily concealed even under a t-shirt, providing a fast draw stroke with easy re-holstering (due to the rigidity of horsehide). All the function of Kydex with the classiness of fine leather.

For IWB (which I rarely do with this pistol, since it's so easily concealable OWB), I have tuckable Galco "Stow'n'Go" in suede.

The Sig P290RS is not far from what you just described.

Yes and no. I handled both, researched both and considered both. While the dimensions are very similar, the 290 has an entirely different feel in the hand. It felt chunky and more blocky than the 938. The reviews I read on the 290 were mixed and the final determining factor for me was the big notch in the grip that the mag seats into. That is definitely a palm pinch while reloading waiting to happen. They carried that design feature into the 250 as well. I don't understand the need.

If you carry a 938 I would be interested in hearing which holster options you settled on.

X2 on a holster. I myself am still searching for a nice IWB conceal unit. as well as a front pocket carry option

I have been carrying mine for several years with a Stealthgear Onyx. Breathable fabric, Kydex shell. Very comfortable, best IWB holster I have ever used.

Ms. gamboolgal's EDC is a Sig P-938 Equinox.
She carries Locked & Cocked.
She likes her Sig.
She and I are still doing the normal trying out holsters until she finds "the one".....
I am continuing to try and get her to find a holster / method so that she will carry on her person vs in the purse.
The search continues.....

I've carried a 938 Extreme for some time now. For IWB carry, I've found the High Noon "closing argument" to work best for me. For pocket carry, you can always find the Nemesis to be very popular, but I've switched over to the Blackhawk "Tecgrip". That one just seems to give me a smaller, slightly less bulky profile. YMMV

It took awhile for me to get used to carrying something "cocked and locked", but I shoot my P938 so darned well I got over it. Now I don't even think twice about it.

The first holster I got for it was a DM Bullard "Dual Carry". I like leather holsters, and it was an OK holster but I found it difficult to get on and not that comfortable for more than a few hours. Part of that may be because my SIG also has the G10 grips and they rub my love handle raw. Now I use a N82 Tactical holster that I absolutely love. It's the first holster I've used where I'm not constantly aware there's a gun on my hip.

I agree. The 938 feels very sleek, like it sits low in the hand, and points very naturally. The 290 felt like crap to me. It felt bulky, and like the bore axis was way too high for my liking.

I've handled staplers that felt better in the hand than the 290.

I think the stapler comment is very funny and quite accurate. Still, though, my 290 has really grown on me over time. It does what it needs to do well and without fuss and is extremely concealable. It will never be my favorite pistol but it is quite useful. So much so I have difficulty justifying nearly $700 give or take for a 938 Extreme. If they made a P938HD, I’d find a way to justify that, though. I like steel, given the option.

I've been carrying my P938 Extreme for the past two years. I also found that I had to get accustomed to carrying "cocked and locked". Oddly, now I find myself uncomfortable carrying anything that isn't capable of being carried that way.

When I pocket carry (majority of the time), I use a Desantis Super Fly holster.

On the less frequent occasions when I don't pocket carry, I use a OWB Desantis Mini Scabbard.

Mitch Rosen Upper Limit (Full Detail or Express versions) is designed for these small pistols and is a straight drop pancake.

I really like my P938. Got the one with rosewood grips and will second the OWB Desantis Mini Scabbard.

Surprisingly accurate for such a small gun.

I will also second the notion of the DeSantis Mini Scabbard. I have one for my Ruger SR9c and it does a fantastic job of holding the gun close in to my body without being uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time. Very concealable too; even with just a lightweight polo shirt over it.
