I carried a Sig 239 for over 5 years. There were times where dressing around the gun was an inconvenience. I picked up a Ruger LCP Custom and pocket carried it for over a year. A .380 is absolutely the smallest semi-auto self defense round I will carry and the LCP is not fun to shoot so I began looking for an "in between" option. I found a brand new, in the box 938 Extreme with one 6 round magazine and two 7 round magazines for $540 last weekend so I took the plunge. I left the pawn shop and went straight to the range. Below are my thoughts.
It groups well, the gun is capable of much better accuracy than I can produce. It is very thin. Thin is great for concealablility but I can't get my normal two handed grip on it. This doesn't seem to deter accuracy or shoot-ability but it is different than I am used to. The Extreme has the G-10 grips. All the grip surfaces are fairly aggressive and unless you have labor hardened hands you will feel the aggressiveness of the grip surfaces when you shoot it. Recoil is very manageable, it even feels softer than the LCP. Because of the short grip length I pinched my palm and one finger several times while aggressively and quickly seating a magazine in a simulated combat reload. The finger pinch drew blood. My XDM 3.8 Compact does the same thing in my hands.
The night sights are bright but I think I would prefer XS Big Dot sights and may put a set on this gun.
I initially failed at field stripping the gun. I had to resort to the manual to see exactly where to position the slide to enable the slide stop to be pushed out.
The package came with a kydex belt clip holster. While that is thoughtful of Sig, the bulk of the overall dimensions of the holster push the gun much further away from the body than its small size should require. I prefer OWB carry in a leather holster with a vertical draw but after reviewing multiple holster manufacturer's sites I may end up carrying this gun inside the waistband. Most of the OWB options came with a cant and looked overly bulky for such a small gun.
I've never carried cocked and locked so that is going to take some getting used to. I'm confident the gun won't fire without direct action and the 8lb trigger pull provides added confidence in that arena but I would have been thrilled if Sig offered a pistol with these dimensions in a hammer fired DAO option. Hello Sig, are you listening?
I am considering buying a threaded barrel. Not because I plan on running a suppressor but because it adds another 1/2 inch to the barrel length and might come in handy in a contact distance scenario. That protruding barrel might keep the slide from being pushed out of battery if you catch my drift.
Overall I am pleased with the purchase. I will need to run several more boxes of ammo through it and get removing the safety ingrained into my draw stroke but I think this gun will fill the bill for that "in between" option I was looking for. And no, I didn't consider a striker fired, no safety, option.
