I've been searching high and low for the past two months for German made Sig mags for a P229 .40 and they're about impossible to find. After much resistance, I went ahead and bought a few new OEM mags knowing they're Italian made by Mec-Gar, who is now the manufacturer of Sig's original mags.

Anyone out there have any issues with the Italian made Mec-Gars? I'm hoping someone out there has used both German and Italian ones and can tell me if they've noticed a difference between the two. Reliability, spring life, finish durability, function - give me the good, the bad, and the ugly.

If the general consensus is the Mec-Gars are good, then I'll get a few more and just settle for the fact that the German ones are pretty much non-existent anymore. My thought is Sig obviously went to these mags and they've had success with them, otherwise they would not be OEM from Sig.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Mec-Gar makes OEM mags for just about every major manufacture in the world.

If SIG gave then the same specs to work with as the German made mags, there is every reason to believe they are just as good.

They only make what the contract specs tell them to make.

rcmodel,

Thanks for your reply. I figured they'd be right on with the specs and have everything designed the way Sig wants it to be. Do you know how these mags have held up over the long run? I'm curious how they last after a few years.

No idea on SIG mags.

I have had nothing but good luck with Mec-Gars in other guns though.

I have three for my K-T P3AT that have remained constantly loaded for 2 1/2 years when not being shot.

They are still going strong.

I have Mecgars for Sigs and CZ that are many years old and have many rounds thru them. No problems.

The manufacturing centers in northern Italy are acknowledged to be among the best metal fabrication locales in the world. The Germans and Swiss have nothing over the Italians when it comes to metalwork.

Thanks for the response, rbernie. In just the past few days, I've read up and found information that the Italian born mags are supposedly better quality than the original German made Sig mags.

Just having a hard time digesting the whole 'German gun - Italian mag' thing, not that it should matter. Range time will tell me how the mags perform later on today.

Appreciate the responses. If anyone else has one, chime in - please!

Riceboy72, I use nothing but MecGars with my SIGs and Berettas ... all my SIGophile friends use MecGars as well, and I've never heard of anyone having problem 1 with these mags. MecGars were also our magazine of choice for our M9s in the sandbox, which should tell you something.

If you need a quick supply of mags for a great price (and flat-rate shipping fees), check out Top Gun Supply (lightning fast and very friendly service): http://www.topgunsupply.com/

Currently evaluating a couple of the MecGar stainless 8-round 1911 mags I picked up at the last WAC show ...

I got a meg-car mag for a IMI Jericho, and it doesn't hold the slide back after the last round. I also got one for my Sig 226, and it works fine, though i noticed that the follower is much smaller than the one in the factory mag, and isn't as stable in the mag body. CDNN has some factory 229 .40 mags in stock for $33.99.

I use nothing but MecGar in my Beretta and my Sig P226. I especially like the improvements when they come out with a 17rd flush fitting 9mm mag. I have three each of those for my M92FS and my P226R. I'm hoping they do the same with the H&K P30 since I just ordered one of those. Know how I stumbled onto MecGar in the first place? My best friend is a retired 05 (Lieutenant Colonel) of Special Forces and he said that most all the "Operators" he knew swore by them. That was good enough for me. I've never had any problems.

Been running Mecgar magazines (both labeled by the manufacturer and Mecgar) on my Sig, CZ, and my Walther. They run very well in all three guns, no issues.

About the only thing I would change is put plastic or rubber base pads in place of the metal ones used by Sig and CZ.

Oh I love the Mecgar Sig 17 round magazines for the 226 9mm.

Thanks for the replies. I've read many postings over the past few days and many feel the new Mec-Gar magazines are actually better and most structurally sound than the German zipperbacks. Posts have claimed the spot weld that held the dovetails togther broke, rendering the magazine useless. The Mec-Gar magazines, once Sig went with them, have had little complaints and appear to feed just fine. No issues with the tube whatsoever. That being said, I'm sold. Thanks for the help with finding mags for a low price. I'll be ordering some later tonight.
