Hey guys i bought a sig Mosquito a couple months back for my wife. Stupidly not doing my research and not finding out all the problems with them. I had alot of problems with it until i went back over the owners manual and finding out they recommend only CCI mini mags and stingers. Has anyone else had any luck with a different ammo. Ive tried Winchester white box, Remington thunderbolt, and Federal blue box. Time and time again FtF and FtE. drives me nuts. I bought it so my wife could go to range with me and shoot but didnt want to spend alot on ammo. The reason i got that one for her was it fits great and she felt comfortable with it. I know about benchmarks and Mark IIs but fit was important to her. Basically just want to know if anyone has had any luck with any cheap ammo. thanks and Semper Fi

I use the white spring in mine (it's the threaded barrel version) and it cycles CCI standard velocity OK. Make sure the spring is installed properly since one end is larger than the other. It does need to be kept cleaner than my other .22 pistols to function.

Check out the thread/poll at the link below

As a fellow Mosquito owner, I was also interested in the best functioning cheap 22LR and posted the poll below.

Most folks seem to have the best? luck with the Federal Value Pack after breaking 'em in with the hotter stuff.
Might want to read the comments-the poll was posted with semi-auto functioning in mind, but respondents' guns vary.

'Course, if it doesn't malfunction TOO often, consider it an opportunity for your wife to practice her clearing drills!

Stupidly not doing my research and not finding out all the problems with them.

I don't know that the new ones have that many problems?
I did a lot of research on it and the Walther P22 before finally deciding to buy. Reports generally seem to be the newer models on both the SIG and Walther have most of the bugs worked out of 'em.

Even "expensive" .22lr like Mini Mags are still less than 1/2 of what it cost for 9mm, and thats the cheapest center fire.

If your wife had wanted a 9mm you would have been GLAD she picked something with such cheap ammo, so just suck it up and shoot the Mini Mags. If you actually practice SHOOTING instead of plinking, you will still save oodles of cash over center fire, and you will actually improve your shooting.

A LOT of people cite rim fires as training aids, but your skills will only improve if your actually practicing. burning up ammo doesn't teach you anything. Its FUN, but thats the end of it.

Remington Golden Bullet Bulk Pack ammo works just fine in my Mosquito.
It did in mine as well. Basically, anything copper-washed worked well in mine.

And then I sold it to put the $$$ towards a 1911 conversion, which has a better trigger to boot :p.

HTH.

Siggy Skeeter

I bought a Skeeter last week and have put 300 rounds through it...CCI Mini-Mag HP at 1260fps...no problems, with 2 exceptions. On the first mag I inserted, with the slide locked back, when I released the slide lock to chamber the first round it didn't chamber. It pushed the round halfway into the chamber and stopped. I had to finish pushing the rack forward with the hand to seat the round in the chamber. It did the exact same thing on the second mag, and I was about to get a little pissy, but no hiccups after that. It was fun to shoot, accurate, and cheap. It was just a little tight/fussy with the first couple of mags out of the box.

Yes, the CCI Mini-Mags are a bit more money, but not much...still cheap. I paid $6.47 at the local Wally World for a 100-pack. Bought 6 of them. There's a reason why Sig recommends them and gives you a coupon in the box for $10 rebate when you buy 4 100-packs. Use the CCI. It's good/fast ammo.

I wanted a good trainer that is cheap to shoot, fun to shoot, reasonably accurate, and more like a full sized pistol...didn't want a Walther P22 because I've had one before, and while it was fun and had zero issues with cheap Federal bulk .22, it felt like a toy in my hand. I can put this Skeeter in a paddle holster and practice 3-point draw, etc.

The trigger on the Skeeter...well...takes a little getting used to, but I'm alright with it.

Yes, a Ruger or a Browning would likely be more accurate, but it just wasn't what I wanted in this gun. I'd have a Ruger in a heartbeat if I was trying to shoot deadeye dick bullseyes consistently.

I recently purchased the mosquito and have tried many diff ammo brands/types.
No matter what spring is used the only 2 100% reliable ammo choices have been the CCI Mini Mags or Federal Gold Match.
In my area the Federal Gold Match at $29 is a bit cheaper than the CCI at $45 per 500rnds.
I would like to pay less but its not worth the annoyance to my wife, daughter or myself - its suppose to be fun!

BQ I agree 100% that its all about fun. I picked up 500 rounds of the cci mini mags for about $6.95 a box and they work great in the rig. I was just trying to find out if theres any cheap stuff out there in the same price range as the remmington thunder bolt ect. I was really angry about the function of the pistol at first but it works great with cci ammo. Thanks for the imput and Keep putting rounds doen range. Semper Fi

After talking with Sig, changing to the white spring and only CCI mini Mags. No more problems. Buy a couple 1000 and shoot. It's not that pricey compared to 9mm. Wish it weren't so but it is.
