I am in a dilemma on what to get. A Sig or XD? And which caliber? I have an EAA .45 1911 but would like something a bit more compact, and want reliability. I also have a 9mm feather usa rifle and am not sure that 9mm has the punch I am looking for (let the debate begin anew.) There is a nice deal on a used XD in .357 sig at a local gun shop but another tempting deal for about $200 more a used Sig with a second barrel. Any suggestions?

I've got the XD40, P220ST, P2009, P226.
You're asking Sig or XD? They're a very different class...
Bottom line is, how much are you willing to pay?

As Gudel said...apples to oranges, kinda hard to compare the 2.

Getting the .357sig with the .40 barrel is a great option.

2 guns for the price of 1 1/4. :p

I have a P226 in 9mm. Without wanting to get into a caliber war becasue I hate them :cuss: I feel the 9mm is plenty of gun. Cheap ammo = lots of practice = more accuracy = dead bad guy

I have shot the XD and was impressed as well.

Just depends on how much you want to spend!

(I would go with the Sig with 2 barrels);)

SIG SIG and SIG. Even though the XD is a lot less $ new, you can get a used Sig in excellent condition for the same price (or less) as a new XD.

The XD is a good gun, I've owned 3 different ones but the Sig is a whole lot better imho.

Which gun feels more comfortable to you in your hand and/or the holster you plan to use if you'll conceal it (when carrying).

I love the looks of the Sig...just didn't fit my hand very well.

The XD is a more natural fit for my hand.

See if you can rent both, then make a decision.

Either way you go, you'll be getting a quality firearm.

The feel in your hand and the ergonomics of the control functions are very important. IMHO, the SIG w/2 barrels would be tough to beat. They are top notch weapons and you won't regret it.

SIG => DA/SA with decocker
XD => SAO

The above is the main difference to the end user

What are they asking on the SIG?

Did you see that CDNN's new catalog has a wide variety of used SIGs in for $349 and up. Add $10 for shipping, $25 for FFL: would that beat your local pawnshop price?

Though SIGs have a more high-falutin' reputation, I'd just pick the one that felt best in the hand. You really can't go wrong with either.

IRT .357SIG vs. 9mm: does the warm feeling from having a .357 outweigh the extra cost and inconvenience of hoarding another cartridge?

Both gun and cartridge selection basically boil down to how you personally feel on that day. None of your options are terrible ones. But give CDNN's catalog a whirl for price-checking purposes: http://www.cdnninvestments.com/dowournewcat.html

Good luck, -MV

The answer is get both. I have both in several calibers of each. DOn't think you will be upset with any choice.

Only main comment I might make (I am a SIG'o'phile'') - is that a lotta guys compalin about corrosion on XD slides with carry - just passing that on.

As this is autoloader stuff am moving to relevant forum ;)

Rented an XD at the range the other day in 9mm for my fiance to shoot. She liked it. I didnt, I thought the grip was akward. Trigger pull was long (then again, I've been spoiled by a 1911) but manageable, it was accurate enough though. I personally didnt like the grip or the design, but you won't necessarily like the same things I do. Rent one and shoot it. The lady liked the 9mm, but wasn't too crazy about the XD in particular.

Having shot both, I'd steer you towards the SIG.

In my soon-to-be-flamed opinion, the XD is an oversized, oversprung, underengineered weapon. It's almost like Springfield Armory asked "How can I make a 1911 look like a Glock?" and the answer was "XD!" The slide is too wide and blocky for CCW; the poly grip doesn't fit my hands --- in fact, the thumb depression ends up slamming into my knuckle with each shot; the grip safety is redundant in this gun in light of the trigger safety, which I also find uncomfortable; finally, the magazine springs and recoil springs are stiffer than they need to be. Furthermore, what is the point of a single stack .40? If you're going modern, make it a double stack. However, it seems to shoot straight and go bang every time.

In contrast, the SIG feels better in my hand (still not a fan of the grips, however), shoots well and has a sterling reputation. I also find the aesthetics more pleasing. Also, SIGs also seem to fire every time. Expect a higher resale value for it if you wish to part ways.

Don't balk at the higher price --- you can ammortize it. That is to say that the extra cost of the gun will fade with time. If you hold on to the gun for 20 years, that extra $200 won't be much.

Budget Gun or Keeper?

XD: Its a budget gun - decent gun for the money. Yep, there are some issues but every gun has a few.

Sig: Keeper gun. A sig will continue to impress you long after the XD has been sold/traded for a different gun.

This is just my opinion. Take it with a grain of salt...
I'm an HK guy.

meh, guess I'm the odd man out--I've owned both, still have the xd's, but no sig's. Nothing really worng with the sigs--they go bang every time. But for me whether its ergonomics or whatever, the xd's shoot much more naturally than the sig's. Had to try much harder with the sig, and even then it wasn't as accurate. I kind of finally decided it didn't so much matter to me what the name or rep or whatever was, I was going to keep what worked well for me. 1911's are still tops on my list, but for a duty type gun I like the xd's the best over other's of hat type I have owned, and I've had most of them.

You hear the corrosion thing alot, but I'm not sure whether that was an early model thing, a hit or miss thing, internet urban legend or what. I've actually been carrying my one xd quite alot lately, and have owned both for a couple years now, and haven't had any problems to date. Then again, I have heard of people who had stainless 1911's that had strange rust problems--maybe it's just weird body chemistry or something. I keep waiting to have problems with mine, and maybe I will eventually, but nothing so far:confused:

I don't understand your question, "Furthermore, what is the point of a single stack .40? If you're going modern, make it a double stack."

Are you referring to Springfield Armory XDs? As far as I know, XDs all use double stack magazines. I have an XD 40. It has a twelve round, double stack mag.

I have shot both models you are looking at and had to choose as you did a few months ago. I ended up with the XD and haven't looked back. It felt better and pointed better for me. It has gone bang every time I have pulled the trigger.

As far as slide corrosion, I haven't had any problems, however the finish does seem kind of "thin". I have a few scratches on it that did away with the original finish. I am going to send it out and have it refinished for $45 and be done with it.

As for you, do as everyone has suggested. rent them and shoot them both. Whichever seems better, buy it and don't look back.

I have an XD-40 service. Gun fires flawlessly. Sure it doesn't look as good as my friends SIG, but it gets the job done. I'm not a collector, so I just want it to go bang when I go to the range, and god forbid, in a bad situation. Also the cocking indicator and chamber indicator is a major plus for me, and I also like the the trigger, unline my friends .357 SIG which fired when my finger barely touched it.

You're right, my mistake. My friend told me his mags were single stack, but now that I have looked at them again, they appear to be double stack. Oops.

I still don't like the XD, though.

I never handled a XD since they are illegal to sell in MA. Personally, I would go with a Sig. No particluar reason, I just believe they are better made guns than most other semi-autos.

Me, I'd go with the SIG but I am a SIG guy. To be honest though this is another example of comparing two perfectly serviceable arms that will serve you well no matter what you choose barring a lemon from either.

From a "serious social" standpoint it really is a wash. Both will put bullets where they need to be and both should be reliable enough. The plastic.....uhh sorry High tech polymer :neener: of the XD might be a benefit as far as maintaining goes.

From a fun standpoint the SIG has some advantages.
It is likely to be more accurate in my experience.
You can change grips.
There are many aftermarket parts.
Parts and magazines are more easily available.
It's a SIG MAN!!!! Not some plastic Glock wannabe. :D

As others have said the XD's only real drawback in my experience is the slide finish so I suggest getting the stainless slide if you go that route.

Oh and an XD will never be this pretty. :neener:
