I'm considering buying the 22lr conversion kit for my Legion P-226 9mm. My wife is more comfortable at this point shooting 22lr since she's new to handguns plus it would be nice to be able to practice my skills with cheaper ammo. For the $350 or so, she'd be able to practice with the sig using 22lr then graduate to the 9mm. I just visited the Sig website and put my zip code in and they said it was unavailable in my area. I'm thinking it probably has to go through an FFL since the kit is the slide, barrel and the nuts and bolts of the gun. I'll call Sig Monday to verify. I'm located in Ct. so that's probably part of the issue. Hopefully if this is the issue, the FFL I paid $1200 for the gun will give me a break and not whack me too hard on the kit. Another option would be for a little more I could get her the 250 22lr compact, same paperwork involved. Or keep renting a 22 semi for $15 for the next few range trips. Any thoughts on the conversion I'm considering or this issue is welcomed. Thanks, Mike

I suggest that you wait until the Christmas holiday season Sig usually has a sale in the 22lr conversion units. Mine was under $300.00 last year.

Could be this is the problem. I just tried ordering one, entered my zip code because it's listed as being a restricted delivery in some areas, and got the green light to go ahead and place my order.

I've got one on my W. German 226 and it's great. I've had some trigger work done on it for 9mm and that, added to the weight of the gun, makes .22 shooting a dream. My big problem is I hate taking it off and putting the 9mm back on....and I'm split between shooting in .22 or 9mm.

I don't recall having to go through an FFL for mine, although I live in WA state. I'd give Sig a call and see what customer service has to say. Also, I believe it's the frame that is the "registered" part...generally speaking its the part with the serial number on it. Of course, who knows in CT. Anyway, give Sig a buzz....

Switching it over isn't any more complicated than breaking down the gun to clean it is it? Switch slides and mags only? Bannockburn, I also ran the zip of a state I used to reside in just to see and it gave me green light also. That's what happens when your state is very anti-gun.

You must have very unusual/strict firearms laws in Connecticut, as most states follow the BATF/Federal definition of what makes something a firearm in their laws.

I read through the Connecticut laws here -- http://ct.gov/despp/cwp/view.asp?a=4213&Q=494616&desppNav_GID=2080 -- and the definition of what is or isn't a firearm doesn't seem to be directly addressed. Maybe I just need to read farther?

The Feds consider the frame of most semi-autos -- where the serial number and identifying info is found -- to be the firearm. That means you can -- in most states -- send a slide off to be worked on (or refinished), purchase a new slide (including a conversion kit) without concern or having to involve a FFL. You can even use the US Postal Service for the slide assembly/kit's delivery -- only FFLs can do that (use the USPS) for a handgun. I wonder why Connecticut is different?
