I have a Sig P220 .45 with night sights for my HD gun and want a good hand held flashlight (Not Mounted).

Many people like the surefire but they are very expensive, so, are there any other flashlights as good for less or should I just go for the surefire?

I'm sure there are good flashlights that cost less than the Surefire, but you have an $800 pistol and are complaining about having to buy a $150 flashlight.

Get the LED version unless you own stock in a battery company.

I have 2 surefires. The 9p 85 dollars and the g2 (catch on sale for 35 dollars) Solved the battery issue - Radio Shack rechargeables and they last longer than a throw away.

Sig makes a small flashlight that is a bright LED and costed like $65. Can be used as a handheld or with the mount they provide should you change your mind.

I've tried a bunch, and still like my Streamlight Scorpions the best. I have LED lights for general use, but the LED's dont put out a beam like the xenon bulbs do. Like anything else, general purpose things dont usually work well for specific use, and lights are really no different.

The battery issue really isnt an issue if your using the light specifically as a SD type, or need specific light. They dont get used all that much, and the lithium batteries last a very long time. The biggest problem with a lot of these type lights is, the button/switch isnt protected, and the light comes on in your pocket and drains the battery. Another plus for the Scorpion, the button is protected, so they rarely come on in your pocket.

The barrel is also fully rubber encased, so its comfortable to put in your teeth, and you can work the button with your tongue too.

If your P220 has a rail, you may want to give a weapons mounted light some more thought too. They really do work well. They dont replace the hand held either, they all work together as a package, and give you more options.

I've got white light systems up to 500 lumens including Surefires and Streamlights.

All you really need is a Streamlight Scorpion for under $30. As long as it has a pressure switch, any high intensity flashlight will work fine.

I've said it before, I'll say it again; I like led's just fine, but a really bright incandescent with full spectrum light is a better choice for most illumination. Anyone running a 100+ lumen incan should be using rechargable Li-ion cells. They are cheap, the charger is cheap, and they offer more power than any handheld powersource on the market for a fraction if the cost of even disposable alkaline cells.

why not a maglite? Not as small as the ones you listed, but you could use as a secondary weapon in a SD situation....

why not a maglite?

Because they are the Model T of serious illumination tools.

A secondary weapon is a liability when it's so bulky it gets in the way of your primary weapon.

Maglite??
What an utter piece of crap.
Crappy light output and totally unreliable.

I have a bunch of different Streamlight ones for general use.

Coast lights are very good.
The one I have has a very bright and white light that reaches way out.
3 AAA batteries last a very long time.

I have several other Coast lights too.
I'm a light junkie.
