Hey guys, I just purchased a used Sig P228 today. The gun has some slight holster-wear on the end of the slide, but nothing big, and everything mechanically is very tight. It looks to have been carried a lot, shot a little. I paid $575 with brand-new in the box CTC Lasergrips, and a spare set of Hogue grips, does that seem reasonable? Also, I constantly hear about the P220's and 229's, but not much about the 228's. Are they still considered to be of the same caliber (quality, not bore size) of their newer counterparts?

Also, if any Sig owners have any input as to worthwhile upgrades or special treatment for my new toy, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I think you got a great deal if you consider the price of the Crimson Trace Grips.

The P228 is considered by many to be one of the finest 9MM designs ever made. Take a look over on Sigforum.com to read more about them.

The P228 is no longer made, as it was replaced by the P229. The P229 was designed for the .40S&W and therefore has a stronger slide. While it easily accommodates the 9MM round, many feel that the beefier slide throws off the balance.

The P229 is a P228 with a milled stainless steel slide. The P228 has a stamped steel slide. That isn't a bad thing. I personally prefer the stamped slides, because they are lighter and thinner. The only issue is that they can't hold up to .40 s&w. If you are going with a 9mm, that isn't a problem at all. If I had to choose one sig, I would definitely choose the P228.

Thanks for the votes of confidence, I think I made a good purchase then. I was just pricing the CTC grips and new they were well over $250 at many places, and even as high as $344! If I use some questionable logic, it's almost as though I bought the gun for under $300. :)

I want you to go with me to buy my next car. Or maybe pick my lottery numbers.

Great deal.

Oh, I am when I get a spare minute this week. I'm also about to cook up some +P JHP handloads for it, as well as some cheaper training ammo so I can get used to it. My only other SIG experiences have been behind my father-in-laws P229 in .357 and I loved that gun.

Well guys, it shoots real sweet. Today I sighted in the Lasergrips and shot 100rds through her and it ran like a top. One more thing I didn't realize until looking at the gun in low-light is that this gun also has Tritium sights! That's a nice little bonus after getting a SWEET deal. I was punching out the 10-ring during sustained rapid firedat 15 yards without the Lasergrips, and punching out the X-ring with them. Man, I never that I could love a pistol as much as my Beretta 92 (sold, sadly), but this gun might just be my new love.

Great score!

Don't quote me on this, but I believe some Sig 228s are still being used by certain units as the M11.

I don't see why it wouldn't be. It's essentially a 229 in 9mm, so it wouldn't make a lot of sense to go out and replace them all when the 229 came out. I mean hell, they made them until like '05 or '06 as I recall.

P228

Sig still makes the 228 for the Gub'ment as the M11. They're completely German made guns that still get routed through Exeter as before.

Some folks feel it's the best classic series pistol Sig has ever made. I believe it's one of the best pistols anyone has ever made. There's something about the way that pistol shoots compared to say a G19 (another great pistol) that makes for some exceptionally reliable, accurate and (need I say it) satisfying shooting, particularly off-hand. It's simply sublime.

Happiness is a warm P228 Sig!:D

i consider the 228 the best 9mm that sig makes. the stamped slide gives it a certain cache that the 229 lacks. i find it easier to carry than the 226 and it also feels thinner. i've also found it to be just as accurate.

it is still in service with the military as the M-11

the reason it was replaced in the domestic lineup by the 229 was to standardize production of the slides...all sig slides are now manufactured domestically.

the nicest thing you can do for your 228 would be to send it to Grayguns for an action tune. www.Grayguns.com

Awesome, thanks guys! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this gun! I'm thinking about sending it to Gray's after looking over those pics.
