Sig p229 vs sig 2022

I'm looking at a new sig 2022 for under $400. A new or even used 229 is a lot more money. Is there any reason to go with the 229 over the 2022. The only issue I see at this point is holster availability.

As an aside a new ruger sr9 is about the same cost as the 2022...is one decidedly better than the other?

I have both - SP2022 in 9MM and a P229 in .40 and they both are terrific pistols. Try each and see if one fits you better or ytou shoot better with one. For me I shoot them both great and would not want to part with either.

There is a lot of savings in the SP2022 over the P229 because the SP2022 has a poly frame and it's capitalization costs were paid long ago after SIG made a QUARTER MILLION of them for the French.

The SP2022 is what I always recommend that a shooter first check out when looking for a hammer fired pistol in mid tier price range.

You can't go wrong with either!

Personally, I'd save up for the 229. But that's me, I prefer metal over polymer. That being said, the 2022 is an awesome pistol. If money is an issue and you don't care about metal vs. poly, the 2022 wins.

Ruger SR9 vs 2022? Striker fired vs. DA/SA... Pretty different method of operation. Which one is "better" depends very much on the style of gun you like.

I can't comment on the 2022. But my 229 has been 100% reliable and a pleasure to shoot.

I honstly don't think you can find a better nine for the money than the 2022. Our local Turners has them on sale for $399 fairly regularly. Bought one for the wife. I'm not a fan of 9mm or plastic but I liked it so much I bought one for myself when they went on sale again with a free laser. Mine doesn't shoot quite as nice as hers but both have been absolutely 100% reliable with a variety of factory & handloaded ammo.

Same here but 95 percent of them are .40. Finding 9MM is a bit harder if that is what OP is looking for.

I prefer the SIG P229 because the E2 grip design just feels better to me than the polymer grip frame of the SP2022.

I currently have a P229 (non-railed CPO trade-in) and I sold a SP2022 to get it. I liked everything about the SP2022 except that the polymer grip was too short. Without the magazine inserted, there was no place for my pinky to go and I don't even have large hands. Makes no sense to give a larger, service-sized pistol a short grip like a sub-compact would have. Not exactly sure why they chose to ruin a good pistol with this silly design flaw.

The P229 grip gives me just enough room for all 3 fingers without the magazine inserted. It just feels better and more solid in my hand. The extra weight really helps tame the recoil of the .40s&w too. Just a better feeling and better shooting gun IMO.

The SP2022 is a great value, but if you have average to larger hands it might not work out so well for you due to the grip issue mentioned above.

P229 > SP2022 for me.

I have the 226, have shot the 229 and have owned the 2022. There is no reason to spend more money on the 229 unless you don't like polymer. It is a great shooter. I was really impressed in the trigger in the 2022.
