Hey all,

I've been a long time reader of this forum, and have found some very helpful tips here. I figure this was the place to go for a rather pressing question.

I stopped by my local gun store yesterday and found hanging on the wall a couple of Sig Sauer 5.56 rifles. I thought "hey, those look kinda cool" so I asked if I could take a look at them.

I fell in love.

Now here's where it gets tricky. I get home and log on to do more research, and discover that Sig is currently offering a $300 rebate for any new 5.56 purchased from a retailer. Until 3/8 (this coming monday).

Normally, when buying a new rifle (or any firearm), I take my time, look around, shop around a bit, even see if I can find someone who owns one so I can try it out. I think long and hard to make sure that it's a purchase I will be happy with.

I found a dealer (budsgunshop.com) that has a new Sig 5.56 for $1250 before the rebate, so $950 afterwards. I have a couple friends, two brothers one of which works at a gunshop of his own, who have made a couple good purchases from this site and have had great experiences. I've already confirmed that purchasing the rifle from there is eligible for the rebate (if I get it in time). Which makes this an absolute steal, from everything I've heard. If it wasn't such a good deal, I would wait and take my time, but this might be just too good to pass up.

So here's my question: what are your opinions on the Sig 5.56? Also, if anyone happens to know about this rebate, do you know if I need to purchase it and have the FFL transfer done by the 8th, or just the actual purchase (I know they need a copy of the 4473 form to send in with the rebate, but does it have to have the same time stamp on it)?

Any thoughts and comments are appreciated. I hate rushing into buying a rifle, but I have a feeling I'll be kicking myself in a couple months if I don't.

Thank you all,
~Lima

I sort of jumped on this too. Bought a SIG556 Patrol 2 weeks ago from Academy Sports because of the rebate. They would not release a copy of the 4473 but were kind enough to call SIG and they mailed it themselves. I now have the emailed response from SIG SAUER offering either the $300 rebate or $500 worth of SIG accessories. From browsing through the SIG556 forums, this is a typical reply. Many recommend the Pelican case, pistol 22 LR slides and cleaning kit. I still haven't decided which offer to take.

If you wander over to the SIG556 forum here:

http://www.sigarms556.com/,

most have been happy with the purchase.

There's some great reviews on THR and other forums as well. I say go for it.

I would think your purchase has to be made by March 8th and I think you have to send in the rebate by March 22nd, IIRC. Make sure to ask Bud's Gunshop to provide the 4473 otherwise you're out of luck. When researching the rebate, there was a link to an alternate forum that stated the FFL would not be providing the 4473. But when I showed this to Academy Sports and they talked to SIG, apparently, it is not acceptable. But the guys at AS made things right.

I absolutely love mine, which is the SWAT version. I used it at an Appleseed shoot and the aperture sights worked very well. I have around 500-600 rounds through mine with zero malfunctions. I put about 400 of those through at the Appleseed without needing any cleaning or extra lube. It runs very cool and the action stays very clean due to the gas piston system. If I could afford another one right now I would get the DMR version and take advantage of the rebate. (I wouldn't get the DMR in place of the SWAT, I just want one to go with it...wouldn't mind a Classic model either.)
