I am considering purchasing one of these handguns and was thinking to myself is it worth it? Can anyone give me some background information on these? I know they are German made....but that is about it.

Also what place is the best to buy online? AIM, Centerfire, JG.....ect? I have heard that holster ware and condition varies between online retailers? Any truth to that?

Parts and mags are limited and who knows when the supply of them will dry up. SIG isn't making parts or mags for the 225 anymore. That alone is the reason I'm not buying any.

A nice little pistol at a great price. Generic parts like springs and pins are readily available, ProMag is making mags. It's a Sig pistol with the reliability and everything that entails, but it's also a discontinued Sig pistol with all that entails. I like them so much I bought a box full of them.

If you want a competition gun to put 10,000 rounds a month through, might rethink that idea, but for a great self defense gun that you take to the range regularly, you can't beat a P6 for $259 with two mags and holster.

Comments on my P6 experience:

As I understand it, it is and is not a 225. Mechanically the same, fit and finish not the same. It is a military/police pistol designed for ball ammo.
1. My first 2 did not like my hollow point defense ammo, was only about 94%, 200 rounds and 98.5%, 150 rounds, reliable. My 9 other 9x19mm pistols shot and shoot it 100%, over 8k rounds total, 5 were/are Sigs. (The odd wording means not all are still with me.)
2. My current P6 is 99.3% w/ that hollow point ammo and 100% with ball, so far (200 hp, 100 ball). This is my keeper, at least for a while. I’m going to try some other brands of HP defensive ammo, maybe PowerBall.
3. It has a heavier double action trigger pull than current models. The DA pull is noticeably heavier than my 228 and much heavier than my 229. Nice single action trigger. (Sorry for the subjectives don’t own a trigger scale.)
4. The ProMag I have is a 7 and 1 mag. The follower engages the slide lock on the 7th round about quarter of the time leaving the 8th in the mag. The follower is hollow plastic so I can’t just cut it down without more work than I’m willing to do. Don't recommed them.

In closing: I like um, want one, got one. It’s mine. You can’t have it.

It would be a good single column/small grip, some like the grip better than the 239, self-defense pistol, IF you find a reliable defensive round for it. All three were accurate enough for me, 3x5 card at 10 meters slow fire. Gad I hate getting old. My P6 is not going to replace my carry guns. It will be another fun 9 and you can’t have too much fun. For self-defence you might be better off with a used or referb 239, 228 or 229 at more money with less work but then you won’t have a P6 like mine.

That’s my opinion and worth just what you paid for it.

Mine was made in 11/97 and has been 100% with everything I have shot in it.

(Including the reloading bench floor sweepings.)

Mostly Berry 124 HP, Speer 124 & 147 GD, and Hornady 124 XTP.

Barrel seems to be hit or miss (pun not intended). I've seen some from 81 that feed and fire JHP fine, some from 85 that don't, some from late 80s that do...

Mine easily has 1200 rounds through it with a variety of shooters on the trigger, and has 5 failures, all of which were in the same box of winchester white box. At this point, I'm guessing it's the ammo :D I managed to grab 3 extra mags cheap, and replace the mainspring easily, so I have 0 complaints!

I like mine and don't have a "Sig" fetish. It's worth what I paid for it, and it cycles well... just wish it was a high capacity weapon. I like 10+ in the rack, but a pocket full of clips, and you'll just have to change more often. I lucked across a spare mag in a box of Sig parts at a local gun store, so I'm happy with what I've got.

Just for those that got one with "holster wear"... take some alcohol, wipe it off, and then use some cold blue on it... they clean up quite well. Unless you have it reblued or chromed, you won't have a "new" gun, but it'll still look okay for use. Repeat the treatment "as needed", and then oil it up with some eezox and you'll be good to go.

Personally, even though I brought up ProMag originally, I owuldn't use their products anymore in any gun. I was extremely displeased with my ProMags even though I eventually sold them all and broke even. I switched to SIG factory mags.

In that vein, I hear rumors MecGar will be making P225/P6 mags again, since they have the tooling anyway for Sig.

My 9/84 "M" prefix P6 shoots everything including 147 GDHPs but I primarily keep 124 Rainier plated HP with nickle cases and +P powder loads in it, that is hot enough and shaped right that nothing has trouble with it.

I don't want to be a wet-blanket, but I've let quite a few people shoot mine along with my P5. My P6 was refinished by Military Gun Supply in Fort Worth before I bought it. Everyone that has shot both my P6 and P5 has preferred the P5.

Personally, I like the design of the P5 better than the P6, but I can't tell any difference at the range as far as accuracy is concerned.

Replacement spring kits available from Wolf.

Mec-Gar is gearing to produce 225/pg mags.

No reason not to pick up what is probably one of the finest single stack 9mm pistols out there.

The P225 is one of the best semis I've ever shot. The balance is suberb and accuracy astonishing. For parts you can get one of the beat up P6's, but I don't know how many parts you'll actually need.

My opinion, for what little it's worth...

If you're just looking for a fun 9mm to beat up at the range from time to time, the P6 will do you no wrong and it's a hell of a pick up for the money. In that case, there's nothing I can say that hasn't already been said.

Otherwise: for another $200-230 or so you can have a CPO P228/P229, which is a more modern design with a lot of advantages over the P6. Unlike the P6, the 228/229 has double-stack/hi-cap mags, a decent factory trigger, and readily available parts. Sig will also continue to support those models for the foreseeable future (the P229 more so than the P228, though most of the parts are identical between the two). You can also get a NIB Sig Pro 2022 for less than $500, which has an amazing trigger for a stock pistol. Great gun, but it doesn't have the "classic" Sig look or feel, and that turns some people off.

If you want a Sig and don't already have one, that's my suggestion. I usually only suggest the P6 to Sig owners/aficionados who want to expand their collection or pick up a Sig range beater on the cheap. There's nothing wrong it - it's a very reliable (with ball ammo, at least) and accurate pistol, and most people find it comfortable and fun to shoot - but it doesn't do anything the newer models can't do as well or better.

That said, if you can find an actual P225 (not a surplus P6) for a decent price (<$500), I'd snap it up. Those have a better trigger than the P6 and tend to be prized among Sig collectors.

If you're looking for a German-made pistol in the $200-300 range, why not a Walther P1? It's a fun classic design and it can make for a good conversation piece. I just grabbed one myself, and really enjoy it. They're available in excellent/like-new condition for less than $300.

I have not heard that either. I do not think Mecgar is going to start producing these mags. There is not a market for new ones and eventually the need for replacements will go away. There is a glut of P6 guns but I cannot see someone like Mecgar tooling up for that need alone.

I've only had mine for a month or so, but I love it. It ate Federal Hydrashok and JHP +P with no problems, as well as WWB, Remington UMC, and range reloads. I have over 700rds through it in 3 trips to the range, and haven't had a single problem. As for accuracy, its a lot more accurate than I am. It cut my groups in half compared to my Taurus PT111 MilPro(Which i think was part of my problem).

The feeding of HP's is a real issue for some. It is however intermittent at best. Some early models feed well, some don't.

Mine is a 5/79. I polished the feedramp and have had no issues with HP feeding.

Over at SigForum.com the consensus recommended round is the Federal Classic 115gr JHP (9BP). I have chambered and fired them with no issues and will carry them in the P6. It is an older technology round with standard pressures, but it should get the job done.

They can be had at AmmunitionToGo.com for a reasonable price.

Mine has the JHP syndrome. Never a hicup with any ball, But few mags of JHP go through flawlessly. Seems to be solved with Pow'Rball ammo. First box went through without a hitch. I couldn't get it for a while, but it is back. I can practice with ball and carry Pow'RBall.

I believe the post-1987 P6's resolved the HP feeding issue.

As for the gun, it's a ton of fun and even though my newest SIG is a P228, I still shoot the P6 as much, if not more.

I bought one a year ago & fell in love w/it right off the bat.Mine is my primary every day carry weapon. He is very reliable & has eaten everything that I have fed him.Every thing from reloads to HP w/no problems at all.I think that they are a great gun & really worth the money. He shoots great & has a very tight grouping.Plus he feels great in my little hands.I am a small female 5'1" & 103lbs w/small hands & it is hard to find a gun that fits my hands perfectly even if it is a single stack but he fits me perfectly.I would never sell this gun.Plus if you want a Sig but buying a new one is too expensive this is a great way to get one at a great price.

I wouldn't however buy one off of the internet because I'm not going to buy a gun that I haven't physically examined before buying.Especially when dealing w/used guns because of the different wear patterns, finish,& to function check it.When I bought mine it was extreamly clean,in great condition, & looked like it he had been carried more than shot.I stood right there in the gun shop & field stripped him to make sure that everything was the way it was suppose to be before I would buy him.But that's just me.

Here is a pic of mine.I keep him oiled w/Hoppe's #9 & clean him w/Hoppe's as well which he seems to like.If I can anwser anything else for u feel free to send me a pm. :)
