SIG-550 for DEA + FBI

A dream my come true:

Exeter's Sigarms gets $115 million federal rifle contract
By TERRY DATE

Democrat Staff Writer

EXETER — A $115 million contract with the federal government means improved stability as well as sales and training business for SIGARMS, Inc., a local gun manufacturer.

The contract calls for SIGARMS to provide up to 3,500 Swiss Arms Model 551 carbine rifles per year over five years to the DEA and FBI and any other federal agency with law enforcement duties that orders the rifle, said Jim Pledger, vice president for law enforcement and military sales.

The carbine, a short rifle, is manufactured primarily — and will continue to be so — in Switzerland by a SIGARMS sister company — Swiss Arms, Pledger said.

Nonetheless, the contract will benefit Exeter where activity will increase greatly for sales, service and training operations, Pledger said.

SIGARMS has its headquarters in Exeter on Industrial Drive and a plant where it manufactures handgun slides and frames.

The SIGARMS Academy, a training facility for law enforcement, military, and civilian personnel is located on Exeter Road in Epping.

SIGARMS has a number of federal government and military contracts for handguns, including the DEA and U.S. Navy Seals. Secret Service agents are armed with the SIG P229.

The $115 million contract for carbine rifles represents a new opportunity, Pledger said.

"This is a real opportunity for SIGARMS to gain a very prestigious customer in the DEA and FBI, and we’re pleased that they’ve put their seal of approval on this carbine," Pledger said.

Before signing the contract, DEA and FBI gun specialists carried out abuse tests on the firearms — throwing and dropping them and subjecting them to saltwater, dirt and sand.

The rifles continued to perform flawlessly, said Pledger, who in 1996 retired from the FBI after a 30-year career that included an assignment as head of the agency’s firearms training program.

"We’re also pleased to introduce this rifle in the United States since we believe it’s the finest rifle of its kind in the world," Pledger said.

The carbine, the official rifle of the Swiss Army, is used by military and law enforcement personnel in Asia, Europe and South America, Pledger said.

SIGARMS is exploring the possibility of manufacturing an American version of the rifle if demand grows, Pledger said.

I split this post off from the original Steyr thread, as I felt it deserved a thread of its own. This will be good news if local manufacture comes about - but will they produce a civilian-legal version???

If the AWB sunsets, there's a HUGE market for this rifle (hell, look at how many views this thread has received :) ). If not, it looks like we'll just have to capture them from the field *cough*...

I thought the barrels were shorter than 16"?

Not on all models.

Besides, if a civilian version is going to be semiauto only, there's no reason they couldn't make them with 16+" barrels. (An example of this are all those silly "M4-geries" out there, with a 14.5" barrel with a 1.5" long muzzle brake to make it legal.)

DSA Arms is bringing the AUG, HK is bringing the G-36, and SIGARMS is bringing the 55x series..... How many more exotic 5.56mm weapons do we need to be produced in country? FAMAS...? Hhehe

(All of these are big "hopefullies')

*keeping my fingers and toes crossed*

I want to retire and work for Sig. A year or two in production and the rest of the time in their Training Div (where I can play, play, play).

If there was a civilian version of the 55X offered here, I would DEFINATELY buy one. I believe its been determined (although I don't remember where) that the cost would be approximately 2 grand.

I think for that to happen, the AWB has to sunset. No one (me included) is going to buy one unless there are normal cap mags available. Same goes for the G36, AUG, etc. Although as a lefty, I wouldn't be to interested in an AUG anyway.

I love Sig handguns more than any other, and have heard literally nothing but praise for the 55X series. I'd be almost first in line.;)

Ok, that was really weird for a min... I was getting "Jacksonville Surgical Associates" while trying to load the thehighroad.org... anyhow...

$115 mil / (5 * 3500) = $6571 per rifle

I'm sure this number includes a lot of long term service and training, etc. IIRC, the actual cost to the .gov, per rifle, is about $1,000. Said contract was split between Sig, RRA, and maybe someone else, I don't remember. Sigs were the most expensive, but produced the best test results during the trials for said contract.

I would simply love to get my hands on a 55x series Sig rifle...

Won't happen any time soon though even if they were available right friggen now, stupid California.

But it sure would be nice to see the rest of the country get to enjoy the fine rifles. Then once I moved to a more free state it would be the first rifle to be added to my collection.

Last Friday I happened across the regional SIG rep at one of my haunts. We did discuss the new products coming out this year and next and he alluded to more surprises than just pistol variations and accessories in the near future.

I'll take a 55x any day.

Regards,
Rabbit.

What are you guys smokin? Read the article again. These rifles will not be made here and the ones imported will be available for LEO thanks to the 89' AWB that doesn't sunset. That means no civilian sales period. The 94' AWB has nothing to do with this. The benefit to SIG Arms here in Exeter is, like they said, sales, service, and training. Exeter is not going to make them here, just import and distribute to LE. Muck like what HK is doing the the G36 and Steyr is doing with the AUG. They are available to LE, but not to us and that's not going to change. Can you guys get a new G36 or a AUG? Hell no, but the feds can.

It's my understanding that Sig will be manufacturing the 551's in its overseas facilities and importing them here. Their 'American Version' is likely going to be a semi-auto with a picatinny rail and maybe an RIS system. I seriously doubt they'd consider a US manufacturing facility for such a small quantity of guns. Given the small US market and high cost of European manufacture, Sig will likely sell the gun for twice what H&K will be able to sell their US made guns here for. H&K's are so overpriced NOW because of the inflated labor costs and exchange rate. In the world today, the USA is the cheapest and best place to make guns. A few years back, it was Japan. Look what socialism did to them!

Okay, I don't want to stir up a flamewar, but what does the Sig do or have or doesn't have versus any other .223 on the market?

Call it a marriage of the AR15's modularity/accuracy and the AK47's reliabilty/durability.

For the most part, that is what it has going for it.
