Bought my SIG SHR 970 in 2001 for 500 on internet from some gun shop in the UP Michigan. I read through Gun Tests and called the gun shop. I asked why such a great gun was selling for 475. He said the locals only want Remington or Winchester. I bought it and paid 25 to Sportsman's paradise in Oxford, Al to accept it.
I got it in 30-06. BEAUTIFUL sleek gun. Ran one patch down barrel and lubed it. Bought a Browning BLR base and some Weaver rings. Simmons Aetec scope and used a laser to get the scope lined up. Then put the loctite on.

I ain't much of a rifle shot and spend most of my time on the skeet and sporting clays range. Using just about any ammo I could easily shoot 2 inches at 100 yds with it. The best I did was 1.5 at the Palm Beach County Sherriff's range in WPB. My buddy could get the rounds in at 0.75 inches. Of course, he used to shoot NRA highpower and was a spotter for a year in Vietnam (with some sniper training and trigger time, but mostly spotting). So the gun is more accurate than I am.

The point of all of this that I took that gun out yesterday after not firing it for 5 years or so (Grad school, moves etc.). The satisfaction of shooting a good group (for me!!) of a shade under 2 inches after all those years is very good. I remembered the research into buying the gun, the cleaning, the prepping, the scope mounting and zeroing, the getting up early after a long 7p-7A shift to go to the range (excited) and it felt good. It felt like "damn, occasionally doe something right".

Oh well, just my rantings. SIG makes good everything even rifles. Don't know if I could justify buying a SIG 556 when my Mini-14 does everything I ask of it but I have no doubt that every dime of 500 bucks was well spent on the 970.
