Yesterday I purchased a Marlin 336C in .30-30. Though I didn't notice it in the store, it's obvious that the rear sight is way off center, but doesn't appear to be windage adjustable. The manual says: "Windage adjustments to the rear sight can be made by gently tapping the dovetail portion of the rear sight..."

I know from personal experience that the easiest way to break something is to "gently tap" it. Does anyone have experience with this, and further, what is the dovetail portion?

Don't worry till after you shoot it. These are often "drifted" severely to zero and it may in fact be in the correct place regardless of how silly it looks. Most importantly, perhaps is that it doesn't seriously hang off the protruding side. Got a photo?

Tapping the rear sight is the way it's done. If it is "Way off center", something is wrong. Get yourself a small brass hammer and give it a few taps and check poi. The dovetail is the wedge shaped part that is in the channel cut in the barrel. It looks like a dovetail so that is what it's called.

Use a brass or Delrin punch so you can have complete control of where you apply the tap and don't mar up the side of the barrel while trying to drift the sight.
