I cant decide between these two scopes. The winner will go on a 270 win hunting rifle, 500 yd max shot)

Sightron II Big Sky hhr- 3-9x42 I like the hunter holdover recticle. That big dot in the middle looks good for low light hunting use, and the longer range shots get narrower lines.

Nikon 2.5-10x42 bdc- I dont really like the Bdc recticle as much, but it should work fine. Better magnification range. I have a old style monarch with no complaints.

Both supposedly have good glass, both cost $400, so which one and why?

Well both are good scopes and I think the Sightron II Big Sky has the edge for slightly better glass and you can get target knobs put on it if that kind of thing floats your boat. I have an option for you if you are interested in saving $200:

The Nikon Team Primos is the 3-9x40 Nikon Monarch with BDC reticle. So this is the model that the 2.5-10x42 model replaced. Nikon changed the name to Team Primos so as not to directly compete with the Monarch and sent them to larger retailers to closeout. So for $200 you get the same Monarch glass, same hardware with the same Monarch warranty. So you lose a little magnification but not really all that much and it is the same magnification as the Sightron you were looking at.

I am a big Sightron fan. Their finish isn't the most durable, but their bodies are more solid than my Monarchs (don't dent as easily) and they flat-out work. I have a bunch of SIIs, and for most uses have never seen a reason to want any other.

Well if you want a 3-9x40 and a BDC yes I think the Primos is the way to go. I have not heard all that many good things about Millet mostly complaints about their tactical scopes and terrible CS.

For hunting deer I have a Bushnell 4200 3-9x40 (very similar to team primos without BDC) on my M1A and it works well. 3-9x is a pretty good all around big game hunting scope for mid - longish ranges. So yes the Team Primos can be good on an M1A depending what your needs are.
