I thought this was great.

The sign on the door of the Williamsport (actually Lycoming Mall) Gander Mountain said, in effect; (paraphrased slightly from memory but essentially correct)

PLEASE CHECK ALL FIREARMS AND BOWS AT THE FRONT DESK UPON ENTERING THE STORE. GUNS USED FOR CCW ARE EXEMPT.

My friend asked a salesperson if anyone ever came in with a weapon "open carried". The salesperson said, "Yes, a few, and it was no big deal". (store ignored it)

The sign is for all the people bringing in rifles, pistols and bows to be worked on, or for the achery range. I would assume they don't want people walking around with firearms that may or may not be loaded. It has nothing to do with CCW or carrying for self defense.

I'm not really sure why bows are included except to think someone would walk in with an empty case, and try to leave with a full one.

My local Gander Mountain has been bipolar on the issue. When they first opened, and for a long time, they had a sign like this. I don't think the wording was as explicit, but it was still clear that CCW were exempt. Then, they changed the sign to remove the exception for CCW. I began to shop there less frequently (and only shop there for whatever I cannot find at Academy or WW, because they nowhere near competitive on anything I can find elsewhere locally) because of that. I kept intending to ask the store manager about the change in policy. Then, one day, the old signs were back up, and CCW are once again permissable.

Despite the fact that many GM stores have this sign, what they REALLY mean is they dont care if you CC, as long as the weapon is unloaded. They have a BIG problem with loaded CCW. Maybe your local GM doesnt hassle you about that, but they have given me a real hard time about it here. Ive been informed by the managers I complained to that its corporate policy, and that I am required to unload my CCW upon entering the store, at which point I can return it to its concealed carry position.

Uh, no thanks. Ill take my business elsewhere. An unloaded CCW is a paperweight.

Have you seen this "corporate policy"?

and they know you are carrying how? The sign says CCW exempt, which leads me to believe I don't have to tell them I am carrying. If they want you to carry unloaded and concealed the sign should say that, otherwise I have no way of knowing thats what they mean.

Hokkmike, yes, I did notice that sign yesterday... I also noticed their inflated ammo prices! eeeeeeek!... I'll shop elsewhere for ammo. But they are very gun friendly.

Go ahead, dont tell them. Just dont be shocked when they call the cops on you if you print or someone sees you with it. And dont even bother trying to stop a crime in progress, unless you seriously want to find out that what im saying is true.

Edit: OR you could always go ask a manager to find this information out yourself. Like I did. So i know f irst hand that they are NOT gun-friendly, despite any sign.

In Minnesota a legal ccw is permitted at GM. Next time in your NY GM ask them if it's safer to carry loaded CC than to stand out by the door (with other people around you) and unload. Tell them that if there were a AD/ND and someone was hurt, THEY will also be involved in ANY legal action involved!
By the way if your gun is concealed, HOW do they know you have one??
Be safe, CraigJS

PS: Legal CC isn't for crime stopping it's for PERSONAL PROTECTION, or wasn't that taught in your permiting class?

Bearhands, they (GM) told me to expect a big hike in ammo prices after the new year. Best ammo deals are still at Wally World.

.223 = $6.00 per 20 rounds (WW)

.40 s & W = $21.98 per 100 rounds (WW)

and at Dicks;

.40 S & W = $42.00 for $220 rounds

Again, "no loaded CCW" is corporate policy. CC of an unloaded weapon is acceptable nationwide. Just because a local store ignores it, doesnt mean its not policy.

This was the first thing I told them. They said they know, they agree that its stupid, but its policy and they have to follow that.

They wouldnt. But I follow the law, I dont try to get away with breaking them like some, therefore I will not CC there even though I probably COULD get away with it.

PS: Legal CC isn't for crime stopping it's for PERSONAL PROTECTION, or wasn't that taught in your permiting class?

NY doesnt have to do a permiting [sic] class. And go ahead and fail to stop a crime if you want to: I carry to protect myself as well as others.

Um.... Isn't standing around unloading your firearm not only dangerous, but a good way to scare people. Like not 'unconcealed carry zomg man with a gun' scary. But 'zomg man with gun in hands racking slide zomg' scary?

Sorry, but I just don't get it.

How am I supposed to know that this is their policy when the sign says CCW is exempt from being checked at the front?

You mention it in passing while browsing in the gun section, only to be yelled at by multiple minimum wage employees who tell you HAVE TO LEAVE RIGHT NOW IF YOU DONT UNLOAD ANY CCW GUN YOU HAVE IN FRONT OF US like they did to me.

OK...what a bunch of idiots. I was in retail for 10 years, that's no way to treat a customer...

but, my question still stands. If you don't say anything, don't print, don't get found out in anyway. How do they expect people to know that this is their policy if their sign doesn't spell it out.

Why would I ask someone if the gun that I am intentionally hiding from public view and scrutiny passes their scrutiny

And no you do not have first hand knowledge, you are not even presenting first hand knowledge you are presenting the interpretations of a store manager

First hand knowledge could only come from first hand correspondence with corporate and a viewing of their corporate policy

I don't know about where I live but in Florida they can call the cops if they wish but I would have committed no crime
Most states require some sort of posting notifying those that may be CCWing the doing so is against store policy
A sign exempting CCW would certainly not fit that description

The policy of checking firearms and bows at the door most likely has more to do with loss prevention than anything els

What part of the country do you live in, and when's the last time you bought any of this at WW? I've been buying it regularly for months. For the longest time, it was either $6.47 or $6.97 -- I think the latter. Now it is $7.47 (within a penny or two). That's still a good buy, and better buy far than anything GM sells. I also buy Monarch .223 at my local Academy for $4.86, too. I have not seen any ammo I want at GM at a price I cannot beat at Academy or WW. The only thing I buy at GM, and then only if I'm in a pinch, is powder or primers. They don't sell either at Academy or WW (that I know of). But if I can be patient, I just wait until I'm buying enough from PowderValleyInc to offset the hazmat and shipping costs. It isn't too hard to do when GM is selling for $25 a pound of powder I can by at PV for $15. The savings on primers are comparable.

I don't understand how GM stays in business. There must be an awful lot of people who do not know how to shop for price or value.

I don't know about that, I've yet to see clearing barrels out front of any gander mountains that I've been to, Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo, I've carried in all of them no problem.

I noticed that sign the last time i was in the Rochester store and take it as they don't care if you carry or not. when I bought my first pistol at the syracuse store I also bought a box of ammo to go with it, walked out the store, got in the car and loaded up.
