Sigs

quickcanary,

All of my SIG's are the alloy framed guns. I havent encountered any frame cracking or wear, other than normal wear, with any of them, and I usually shoot only full power rounds, or equivalent reloads out of them. All have quite a few rounds through them at this point.

Corrosion has never been an issue with any of mine, newer or older. I've never seen rust of any kind on any of them.

The P220 isnt a "large" gun, and is very close to the 1911 Commander in size. I used to carry a Commander and switched to a P220, and then to a P226, and finally a P229, the later two , both 357's. All SIG's, regardless of model, (P230/232 aside) are very close in size, and really only vary about half an inch here and there.

Not sure about the sights, as I dont have any CPO's. Most of the used SIG's I have bought had night sights on them. Either way, they are easy to swap out yourself if you have the tool, which is a good investment if you have SIG's. Its very easy to use, for both installation/removal and sight adjustment. So far, I've sold the old night sights I removed on EBay for about half of what a new set costs, so it brings down the cost even more.

I've got a great collection which includes a 220, 220r stainless, two 226's, a 220 in 9mm and .38 super (two separate guns), a 225, 230, 245, 228 and lastly a 229 in both .357/.40 with conversion barrel. Can I join now?

Scorp-
As others have said, they are probably nickel. I've never seen stainless controls, but that doesn't mean that they don't exist.

quickcanary-
I'll echo what AK said.
Of the hundreds of thousands of alloy frame Sigs made, a very low percentage might have had issues with cracked frames - most of them with very high round counts. I wouldn't worry out cracked frames.
I have a P220ST and its one of the best shooting Sigs that I own. There is a slight difference in perceived recoil over an alloy framed P220.

Corrosion has never been a problem for me with any of my stamped slide Sigs. I have read some posts where people have had some surface rust on theirs, but not many. If you take care of your Sig or any gun for that matter, you shouldn't have any problems.

CPOs can come in any configuration - contrast or night sights. It just luck of the draw. I've seen mix and match slides and all kinds of strange combination CPOs.

That is one handsome Sheperd :)
He looks huge :what: How much does he weigh?
Your P220 looks sweet with the nickel controls and wood - very nice!

Very nice resume - especially the P220s is 9mm and .38 super.
Only thing we need for you to join is some pictures!

I have a P220ST and its one of the best shooting Sigs that I own. There is a slight difference in perceived recoil over an alloy framed P220.

How much difference between a P220ST and a P220 is there with perceived recoil?

The reason I ask is that I am looking at getting an older P220 in the next few months. I have a 1911, so figured another .45 ACP in the collection would be a good idea. But having never shot one, I don't know how much of a different feel it would be.

Complicating matters, I have a P226ST in 9MM, which with the heavy weight pretty much negates the recoil to nothing. Shooting it is a pleasure.

Do you think that spoils me, and I should go with a P220ST? Or will the standard P220 be like my 1911 in feel?

What will the purpose of your P220 be? If it's carry, go for the alloy. It's certainly controllable and the weight difference is significant.

But if it's primarily a range/house gun, stick with the P220ST. I've got both, I like both but there is significantly more "bounce" with the alloy P220 than the P220ST, especially when shooting one-handed.

^ The P220 for me would strictly be home/range use.

The allure of a non-railed nitron finished 'classic' P220 is still a pretty strong one for me.

Go for it, it's certainly not like shooting a J-frame. It just gives you a little more (OK maybe a lot more) feedback than the ST. That says more about how little the ST recoils than how much the alloy version does.

The difference to me is not that great. I really like my stamped slide P220s. I think they are the best balanced Sigs out there - JMHO of course ;)
You'll probably end up with both.
I would buy the best deal P220 first - that is, if you find an ST for a good price (I got mine for $600.00) jump on it. It seems like there are alot of P220s hitting the market. I think it might be because of the price of .45 ammo. I've been seeing alot of police trade-ins. You can get some good deals on them. I'd stay away from the CPOs unless they are STs. I've been reading alot of threads where people are having problems with the finish on them. I've also read about more than one with sights that fall off of them.

Thanks for the information guys -- terrific, really. I now wouldn't hesitate to pick up a non-ST Sig. Thanks for confirming that the main difference lies in aesthetics and recoil, and easing my concerns about the durability of the regular finish. Although I have read some reports of rust and frames cracking, I guess in the grand scheme of things it's not a large problem or we'd be hearing more about it.

I think there is a 10,000 round "torture test" of a regular 220 on Gallery of Guns, and there were no problems with cracking. It would take me quite a while to get to that round count with the current price of .45 (I don't reload).

Like 1BLINDREF though, I've seen definitive reports of SIG having finish flaking issues on CPOs. One seller on SigForum claimed that he has stopped selling non-ST CPOs until SIG resolves the issue.

And I too have noticed a lot of 220s for sale lately. Now's probably a good time to pick one up (and I definitely plan to if nothing comes up that requires the funds to be diverted elsewhere). It is definitely possible to pick up a used blued or CPO 220 for ~$500, and I've seen a couple sellers letting CPO 220STs go for $600.

I'm a new member, so bear with me! I am also a huge fan of Sigs. I was privileged to keep my duty weapon when I left LE. It was a P229 in .40 S&W. I love how it shoots! I have had it for 11 years now, and have put 1000's of round thru it without a hiccup. I stupidly sold my P225 and (2) P230 backups in 1999, but am a proud owner of a P226 SCT 9mm as of today. It came with (4) 20 rd mags and I have some hefty range time planned in the next few days. I'll let you know how it shoots then!

My inventory:

Sig P226 SCT 9mm
Sig P229 .40 S&W
Glock 23
Glock 26
Para Ordinance Tac Four .45 ACP
Colt Det. Spec. II Snubbie .38
Kel Tec .380
(won't get into the long guns and antiques!)

Well, I was in revolver mode for a few months, but the weather's cooling off, so I'm back to carrying the P228. The target on the left was shot all DA, and the one on the right was SA. Both were shot ~50ft.

targets_228.jpg

Drilling with a wheelgun definitely tightened things up a bit, though I had a tendency to shoot high in SA at first. As much as I love the DA triggers on my Smiths, the Sigs have the best DA triggers of any autoloader I've ever had: a smooth, even pull all the way back.

Welcome to THR and to the Club!
I think yours might be the first P226SCT in here. Lets us know how it shoots. Good luck with it!

Erik F-
Very nice shootin :D
Is your P228 a factory two tone? Very sweet gun. I don't see many TT P228s around. Speaking of DA triggers, have you tried the DAK trigger yet. If not, you should check it out. Most revolver shooters really seem like it.

Here are some pictures from my youngests going into the Air Force party. I haven't heard from him yet (5 days) since he shipped out to Lackland. I'm sure he's doing well. The house is very quiet. I'm not sure about this whole empty nester thing.

^ Nice pictures - looks like you could of had enough food to feed all of us in the Sig Club!!!

A quick update to my P220 question......as usual while poking around SigForum, another idea popped into my head - get a P220 Elite! Figure that would put me at one classic (P228), one updated classic with rail (P226ST), and a new Elite (P220).

Besides, the P220 Elite has the beavertail which should in theory help lessening the recoil/muzzle flip, night sights which I would want to add anyway, a SRT trigger, and better front-strap checkering.

Decisions, decisions, decisions.......

PARTY AT 1BR'S HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like your Sigs 1BR, but I'm jealous of your grills. One of the worst parts of my divorce was losing my built in grill :(

Looks like a great party and a fine looking crew. You must be very proud. Next time you talk to the lads, tell them thank you for their service from Me.

Dog ate good that night.. lol

...

Well done 1Blindref, as it appears you've done well by them.

Question: In pic #2, I see a 4 legged critter next to the cooking food.. lol

Smart dog, guarding the Pack's food.. lol

Any chance of a full picture of him/her, as I'm trying to figure out what breed of big dog you have there.

Thanks guys

There is 52 pounds of food on those two grilles - 30lbs of pork ribs, 10lbs of home made burgers, and 12lbs of brats, sausages, and dogs. I didn't even get to eat any ribs - they went the fastest. We had about 35-40 people and there wasn't much left over.
You must be very proud. Next time you talk to the lads, tell them thank you for their service from Me
Thanks Scorp.
Yes, I'm extremely proud of my boys. After 911 happend (they were 15 and 12 years old), they both decided that they would serve their country.
Any chance of a full picture of him/her, as I'm trying to figure out what breed of big dog you have there.
I have two Akitas. The one in the picture is Dexter. He was on grille clean up duty. He's very good at his job ;) The white one is Nikki - "The Hunter Killer"

Great breed. Great Family dogs and Protectors..

Can we add "spoiled" dogs ? ;)

I have a sign in my office that reads:

~ A spoiled rotten German Shepherd lives here ~

As well as a Spoiled Sig P229R CT 9mm

Nice pic's Blindref, you must be very proud. I, as an old disabled vet, will always have a special place in my heart for those that serve. Thank them for me.

My sig's have grown. Here are pic's of my p220 carry elite, p220 Super Match, GSR Revolution and Carry Nitron. The 1911's were shot show guns from Buds that, are like new in bags with the tags on them, and sold as new with factory warranty. box papers, etc...except for a cheaper price of 699.00 each. I highly recommend these to anyone considering a sig 1911.

Drooling on my Keyboard.. lol

Hey Chingon, that's a beauty of a collection, along with the price you stole them for.. lol

Tell me about the dependency of the Nitron Carry, as that was the ONE I really wanted to get, but NO, not approved in or for-sale, in Calif.
