I will be getting a CZ 452 Varmint in .17hmr shortly. I am still undecided about a scope. At www.midway.com, they have a Simmons Whitetail Classic 6.5-20X50AO for sale for $100. I own Simmons 8-point scopes and am content with the glass. Although my Leupold scope is built much better, I do not want to spend more than about $100 for a decent high power scope. So, is the Whitetail a good scope for my soon-to-be new rifle? Does the scope lose its point of impact when the magnification is adjusted and does it hold zero? Thank you.

The scope that you mention is an alright scope.
I have a 17 hmr and I decided to go with a straight power scope. It is a 24 by 44 BSA. It is a decent scope, and I like the straight power unless you are planning to shoot closer than 20 yards. Also the straight power usually has clearer optics, as the variable scopes loose clarity as you zoom to the higher power, unless you get a much more expensive scope.
These can be had for around 69 to 79 dollars as BSA discontinued the straight power scopes. They also make them in a 36 by 44. These are no Leopolds, but they are alot less expensive. They are the Platinum series.
However, the scope you mention should be alright on the 17hmr, should hold it's point.
Just my 2 cents worth.

The Whitetail Classic is a discontinued model, that is why the price is cheap. I have a 3.5x10 on a 260 Rem and have been very pleased and surprised. I really didn't expect the scope to be as good as it is. Good clarity, works well in low light and even looks nice. Think you would make a good buy.

I have 3 of them and I find them very high quality. I use them for varmit hunting and use them on a 223, a 22/250 and a 6mm. I am also surprised that they are so cheap. I have Burris and Leupold scopes also and I would say the clarity is pretty comparable. I had called Simmons several years ago and they said it was their best scope but had sold all of them and were not planning on making them again. So buy an extra if you can. Steve 48
