What are your thoughts on Simmons whitetail scopes.
6.5-20x 50mm I see midway has a sale on them.
I should have added its going on an old remington 760 gamemaster pump 308 caliber.
Dont shoot it a whole lot just need something more than the 4 power thats on it now.
I would like to stay in the 300$ range before sale price ,I have time to wait for a sale .
Thanks guys

Alot of people steer away from them. I got one on top of a 17 hmr. Switched it to my 7mm Rem and beat the hell out of it. All the glass is loose in the front and back.........and it holds zero......and still is repeatable.....I believe-

I have a 3x9 Simmons Whitetail on a Ruger 10/22. It works great for plinking and popping Squirrels. I don't think I would trust it on a rifle that had much recoil. Compared to my Leupold, Burris, & Redfield scopes it exudes "cheepness".

I have the 6.5 ~ 20 on my Kimber 82g. It works just fine, adjustments are repeatable & consistent. I can pick out .22 bullet holes at 50 yds easily and with some difficulty at 100 yds. I don't know how it would work on a hard recoiling rifle, but for what I use it for, it is an outstanding value.

I think Simmons has some interesting technolgy. Their Flex Errector tube patented technology is intriguing. They also offer aspherical lens technology in some of their scopes which helps a lot in tightening up the sight picture by keeping all the colors close together in the lens column. This all comes together in their AETEC Master Series. I'll be getting one this year for eval. It'll go on my 257 Roberts, so it won't be getting 06 recoil.

And I think that's a big part of the issues. Many 06 hunters bought them and broke them. Put a bad taste in their mouth. I guess they have scopes that will handle it, but why? By the time you are up to 06, I'm going with a steel tube Weaver for eye relief and hell for strong construction. If I have more money, I'll put a Nikon or Leupold on it for warranty and service.

I do think that you get what you pay for, in terms of support and service especially.

If you want a steel tube Weaver, you'll have to get one that was made in El Paso, Texas many years ago. I don't believe any company has marketed a scope tube made from steel for the past several decades. If there are any today, I'd like to know about them-especially if they're Weavers. In addition to the inherent toughness of the old Weavers, I always liked the way the blued steel scopes looked mounted on a corresponding blued steel rifle. True, they did weigh a little more and had the potential to rust if they weren't cared for.

I hope Simmons scopes are better than what they sold in the 80's.

A bud of mine bought a Simmons rifle scope. It was cheap but we did not understand just how cheap.

It had glass inside the tube. You could shake it and hear the glass rattling around, and if you tilted it right, you could see the glass particles against the scope lenses.

Since then, I have always been leary of Simmons branded scopes.

I bought one went they went on sale. I like it a great deal. It's very clear, and will focus down to 25 yards (maybe closer). The adjustments are smooth and the parralax settings are just about spot on. I haven't "shot the box" with it, but sighting in was easy and it followed the clicks like it should.

I think it is a super deal at that price.

I forgot to add, when I saw the low price at MidwayUSA, I ordered one of the 6.5-20X50 scopes for my brother's rifle. We haven't mount it yet. Since he hunts the open bean fields, with distances typically of 100 to 400 yards, the magnification should be great. When I tried the magnification even at 20X, the sight picture was still crisp and bright. I was impressed.

I know Simmons went through about three buy-outs and management changes. But they seem to have settled down some. Like I said, I'm not expecting a Simmons to equal a tough USA scope. I do think they have interesting technology for low recoil situations. Don't know how they'll hold up getting banged around.

And yeah SwampWolf - I have a small collection of El Paso scopes. I believe in them and they have worked for me for decades. Got one that has to go into IronSight for repair do to a lens separation (all scopes used bonded lenses with optical glue between the elements) and sometimes it comes un-glued. Can be repaired and is no big deal - so after 30 odd years service, it'll get a tune-up and be back for more :)

I like mine. I wouldn't put it on a heavy recoil rifle. I have it on a bull barel AR and it holds zero just fine.

I've done the same as tnieto2004 has done with his. So far, so good. I am happy with it and no problems. It is cool to see flies on the target paper at 100yds. Mine is about 5 yrs old. Regards,

Nail

I have had two of 6.5x20 50 mm, had to send one back it would not hold a zero, the replacement has worked fine, one is on a 243 and the other is on a 7mm mag. Pretty good glass for the money

I had a Simmons Whitetail years ago. I always regreted getting it and was glad to replace it. But that's just me.

I have a whitetail classic 2-10x44 on a ruger 22-250 and it was good for a few years but now that my eyes have changed with the years I can't get a clear view anymore. It's always blurry and it doesn't take adjustments well at all. I shot it in fact this afternoon and while shooting at 100 yards without adjusting if shot fine but when I adjusted the turrets to shoot at 300 yards it went to hell and was hard to get it back on at 100 yards.

It's old and cheap and I'm gonna either sell it, give it away or trash it and get some new glass.

Lesson learned, spend some money on your glass. You'll always regret it when you don't.

i bought a 6.5x20x50 mildot whitetail classic for an ar. it was on sale for125ish, marked down from 250ish.

i liked it so much i bought 4 more.

I bought one for a 25-06 bolt action. I liked it enough and bought another one for the AR. Good quality stuff. Bright and clear throughout its range.

I've got more than a few scopes, BrocLuno, but the two Weavers I have, mounted on a couple of early Ruger 77s, are ones that I'd never part with. One is a "Micro-Track V7" 2X7 and the other is a "Micro-Track K4" 4X. Reliable scopes that hold their zero, don't fog or leak, have decent optics and, at the time, affordable, American-made optics. I believe in them too.
