Over the years I have heard claims of this or that cartage that darn near fired perfectly flat out to ranges of 500-600 yrds. I really like my 30-06 and 270 because they do the job on shooting decently flat. Just wanted to open a can or worms to see what others thought

Flat shooting rifle

No rifle can shoot flat (unless your a writer for some gun mag.) the bullet starts to drop as soon as it leaves the barrel. What you want is a flat trejectory and set your sight accordingly. Velosity, high sectional density and ballistic coefency also play a part in this. I read an articale a few years back about the TTH-6mm, the writer said it shoot flat to 500yrds. and started rising. I got a big laugh out of that one and started getting calls about building them. I respectly declined and the cal. soon died. It's a 6mm case necked down to .224. Al

Ballistics ain't simple.

As a rule of thumb, the smaller and faster you can make a round, the "flatter" it'll fly....until the complicated bits like Ballistic Coefficient and Sectional Density catch up with it. Then the bigger bullets tend to come into their own. That's why rounds like the .223 and .22-250 have excellent "point-blank" range, where, once zeroed, bullet drop is negligible for several hundred yards, but past that it starts to drop like a rock (relatively) while bigger, heavier rounds with big BC and SD, like .338's, have more consistent arcs over greater range.

.408 Cheytac is a flatter shooting round than most. Cheyenne tactical's 375 cheytac shoots even flatter.

As stated before, cartridges with a higher projectile to case ratio will shoot flatter than those with a smaller ratio. Your .270 winchester will shoot "flatter" than your 06. Furthermore the 25-06 will shoot "flatter" than the .270.

Just keep in mind, ANY rifle firing ANY cartridge will shoot perfectly flat if fired out in space, heck they wont loose any velocity either so long as they don't come within the gravitational pull of any object lol. Just a stupid but fun (at least to me) fact.

I would go with the .243 Winchester.

Savage, Weatherby or Remington should get you in the top 1%.

P.S. I went with the Weatherby Vanguard and now have more rifle and bullet (87 grain V-Max) than shooter.

drop is not that different between so called flat shooting rounds and others. Look at the .270 - then look at .30-06 and .308. no big difference at most normal hunting ranges.

Drop is the most consistent part of it anyway and needs to be figured out before hand. Range estimation and wind reading are bigger variables.

I would say this would be the flattest shooting .22 caliber cartridge out there, the 5.7 Express, a 50 cal/M2 case necked down to .223. Barrel life is an estimated 7 rounds...

You can improve on velocity if you don't mind dropping down to 17 caliber on the 50 BMG case...

Those cartridges look like something out of a slide show! They look like beetlejuice!
