Do you use a single action revolver for concealed carry? If so, what and how.

Do you use a single action revoler for CCW? If so, what do you carry and how do you carry it.

I always have a NAA mini revolver (single action) because, I mean, why not? It is no more trouble to carry than a pocket knife. I have it in a "hoster grip" for shootability and it's amazingly accurate and a fun plinker, though of course will never win a bullseye shoot. I've used it for a lot of critters, snakes, a few rabbits, couple of coons and possums, a wild feral dog once. It backs up whatever serious self defense gun I might be carrying. I figure, if I'm carrying my .38 and behind a barracade and making a reload and the BG starts charging me, it might be faster just to grab the NAA and pop him a couple. Anyway, it's always there because it's so bloomin' easy to carry. You just never know what might happen and it beats tooth and claw in a pinch. Makes a pretty loud bang with that short barrel, too, which is a good thing. Maybe the BG will think it's a .38 and run if that's what I have to use. I ain't countin' on that, though.

Only time I carry my other single actions, Ruger Blackhawks, is open carry while hiking or hunting or something.

I used to carry a Davis Derringer in .22 as my primary CCW, but my ailing father-in-law fell in love with it and I had to give it to him as he is such a nice old cuss.

I regularly carry one. Its the one I feel most confident in, and I strongly believe in the importance of the first shot, where the single action especially shines.

Not currently...

But in the past I sometimes carried a Colt SAA/.45/4 3/4" or Ruger .357 Blackhawk flattop/ 4 5/8" - either in a S.D. Myers Threeperson's holster (strong side) or a homemade IWB (crossdraw). Both under a coat or jacket.

Of course this was before the "new technique of the pistol" came along. :D

Once in a great while, I'll carry my NAA mini-revolver for deep concealment.

Since I acquired my Kel-Tec P-32 several years ago, that has become my "always" gun.

seasonal carry

The Ruger S. Blackhawk is relatively large and heavy, but it is the pistol I carry most in the cold months since I can conceal it under jackets or coats.
As has been stated here before, a qualty holster makes a difference. It does for me.

I don't feel "undergunned" with it at all, in fact, it has been my experience that a "cool head" carries the day over volumous fire power every time.
While I could make every shot count with any mechanism -pistol, I want to avoid the distraction of "rap, tap, slap," routines during stressful situations.

The warm weather and lighter clothing seasons require a different selection.

I ccw a 7.5" Blackhawk

I conceal it with a Ford pickup. My BUG is a SP101 in .357 IWB. Seat belt makes getting it slow. The .45 BH is quick to deploy from under or between the seats. I slip it in a backpack to move it into/out of motel rooms. I travel alot.

For about 4 years my bed gun was a .36 Cap and Ball. Pointed real well for me. I didn't need sights for 25 foot shots. Figured it was great for low light. Had 90 gr balls at 1040 fps.

I want to get a Bird's Head Vaq in .45Colt, put in a Bisley hammer and try that IWB.

Years back, when it was the only handgun I had, I packed a CVA replica of the 1858 "Army Remington" .44 cap-n-ball.

Only had to present it once...:what: :what: :what: :what: doesn't begin to do justice to the look on said miscreant's face when I hauled that out & thumbed back the hammer...

I carried a .357 Blackhawk as my car gun for awhile. My reasoning was I shot it better than anything else, so it being SA was no big deal. Then I started thinking about follow-up shots and reloads. So now I've moved on to a Glock 19. Thinking about changing the car gun to a SIG p220, or a Kel-Tec PLR-16 .:what:

I used to carry a 3 screw Blackhawk in 45LC. The barrel was cut down to three inches and carried pretty easy. Slow to shoot and load and I always rested the hammer on an empty chamber, but I was deadly accurate with the bad boy.

Sometimes I'll carry my Bisley Vaquero in the large pocket of carpenter's overalls around the property, but that's about the extent of it. The shoulder straps and endless pockets make it possible to tote that beast, but otherwise it is not practical to pack.

Ruger vac..357

When i become a better shot with mine I plan on carying it on a regular basis.
I voted never because i havent yet.

I voted "never" but I have a friend that packs a Ruger Blackhawk .41mag. as his sole source of protection. He carries it IWB in a Tucker Heritage and can draw, cock and shoot as quickly, but more importantly, as accurately as I can with any of my concealed carry weapons. We were having some fun at the range one day, I had my 4" 1911, cocked and locked and he had his Blackhawk. He hit center of mass, before I did, consistiently. This is his only gun and he has had it over 20 years. I would say he has over 10,000 rounds through it.

I voted occasionally because back when I had a Ruger Blackhawk, I did carry it quite often when doing collections work for some local car dealers. I had to sell it though a few years ago when money got tight. Fortunately, I put a .45 Colt Blackhawk in layaway today and hope to pick it up in a month or so.

Sure - ruger newvaq in 45colt, mexican carry, with 250gr hardcast and some unique or AA#5.

The G-26 in sidearmor w/ j-hooks is for daytime wear. But for a quick trip for a gallon of milk, I may take the newvaq.

I have before and feel perfectly comfortable with it. My primary carry gun right now is a .38 M&P, but if I had a single action that was somewhat easily concealable I would probably carry that just as much.

Years ago I saw a sweet nickel-plated 3" SAA copy in a gunshop and have wanted one ever since. I would feel perfectly confident carrying something like that.

I had to vote "never" on this one. I currently don't have a CCW, because I don't know if Kansas law regulates me to carrying only one make and model handgun and whether or not I have to register it with the police as my carry piece.

I also only have a New Model Blackhawk with 6.5" barrel, and as great as it is, it's just too big. I'm hoping for a stainless Vaquero either in .357 Magnum or .45 Colt.

That said, I don't see anything wrong with carrying a single action revolver for protection against two-legged predators, it's still a gun, still holds six rounds and can still kill you dead just as easily as any other carry gun. Only difference is you're gonna be way more careful with placing your shots.

Not to hijack but tell us more.
A larger-capacity magazine is a license for inaccurate
indiscriminate fire that kills bystanders and destroys property. After all, you only need to shoot at 7 yards or it isn't a defensive shooting and at that distance an 8" group is enough.:p

Missed shots are dangerous. A tool that will deliver a large, fast, and heavy enough piece of lead just where it's needed is not unsuitable for defense. Some people put more emphasis on magazine capacity over their ability to shoot accurately with said pistol when their priorities should be the other way around. I believe that was his point.

I carry a super blackhawk with the first cylinder loaded with snake shot when I am fishing.( I do a lot of wade fishing and encounter a lot of snakes). I have only needed to use it once when my mountain cur was tangling with a copperhead.
I carry every day and usually carry a Glock 27 if I can't conceal the 27 I pack a P3AT. I would feel more safe facing an attacker with the 44 mag than the .380.
