I have an MTM Case-Guard pistol rest. I used it as shown on the box, resting the barrel in the "Y". My new, blue 4½" Ruger Vaquero (old model) 45 Colt shot about 4" high and to the left at 25 yards. My sight picture was very clear (using sight black) and my trigger pull is straight back. (I practice that a lot while watching TV.)
A little later I shot a group without the rest. I just rested the heels of my hands on a pile of sandbags and BINGO! the smaller group centered on the target. Did it several cylinder's worth.
So, I think the gun was jumping away from the revolver's contact with the rest, away from the ejector housing which is on the bottom right of the barrel.
Rests aren't always the best way to go.
But man, this Vaquero is sweet! Even my wife likes shooting it.
The ammo was Remington Express 45 Colt 250 gr lead R45C.
I also tried some Carroll 250 gr Cowboy Action loads which grouped higher. (I expected that.) Carrol went out of business before I could ask them what bullet they used. It's a Round Nose Flat Point with a very large meplat. The meplat is twice as large as the Remington's. Cuts nice cookie cutter holes and would probably be a better hunting bullet.
My dies just arrived from MidwayUSA. I've got cases, primers and powder. I just need to decide on a bullet.
