I ran to the range today after deciding that the Ruger Single Actions needed some exercise. (Rugers are all I have. I had a very nice Uberti Cattleman .45 Colt several years ago, but I gave it to a friend when he retired and moved to Idaho.) The targets are basically B-27 X (orange) and 10 (gray/black) rings, I tried to set the orange center right on top of the front sight post when I was aiming. All are 18 shots at 15 yards with a single rest.
I went up the bore ladder, starting with a 6.5” Bisley Single Six .22 LR and a 6.5” .32 H&R. I followed it with a 6.5” .41 Mag shooting .41 Specials, a 5.5” Flat Top .44 Spl. and a 4 5/8” .45 Colt.
There were two big bore loads that I though shot well today; a ..41 Special shooting a 215 gr SWC over 7.5 gr Unique. (Upper left #1) This is about as well as I can shoot with a handgun rest. Upper right is a 210 gr plated FP over 6.7 gr Unique, shot ok.) The 215 gr SWC load has been a very consistent load in all three of my .41’s.
The other decent shooter (outside of my flyer) was a .44 Special shooting a Brazos Bullets coated 215 gr SWC over 6.9 gr Unique. (I just flipped the .41 target upside down.) The right target was s 200 gr Coated RNFP over 7.3 gr Unique that went way low. (My GP 100 loves this load, this gun doesn’t.) The .44 was not as consistent as the .41 loads, but not all that bad.
A close third is an old .45 Colt revolver load that I used years ago, a 230 gr RNL over 8.0 gr Unique. Recoil, as expected, was greater with this load but it shot a bit low to point of aim at 15. (Center target, I finished off the .41/.44) I have raised the rear sight up trying to find a sweet spot. Looks like I’ll still have to play with it to bring it up one more inch on average.
The .32 and .22 were a bit of a disappointment as I have shot these guns better in the past. Neither was great for me but one load was the overall star of the day: a 120 gr coated RNFP over 3.7 gr Unique (lower right). It shot high, as all of my .32’s did, but they landed very consistently . The DEWC over Bullseye load at top left was so-so, as were the 100 and 125 gr RNFP loads (2 & 3) It may be the grip that keep them hitting high, as I try to keep most of my handguns sighted for 20 yds. The Bisley style is super comfy but does have a different feel compared to the standard grip frame.
My .22 was OK with POA/POI, using generic Rem 40 gr golden bullets, Aguila Subdonic 40 gr solids and Sellier & Bellot 40 gr Club. If I was a better shot these would probably have looked pretty good.
Has anyone else had a chance to take their SA’s out and go play this week?
Stay safe.
