Sixguns of the Old West...

Watched the sixgun episode of Wild West Tech yesterday. Lot of good information in there, and Daddy Carradine makes a pretty good host (not as good as Keith, but pretty close... )

So, you're a lone ranger riding the territories. What sixgun are YOU packing?...

(I'll divide this into two categories while picking my favorites...)

PRE-1873: I'd pick the 1858 Remington Revolver. Great balance & strength (thanks to the topstrap). And the .44 speaks w/ authority, even in cap & ball. I'd probably carry two (one cut down "Avenging Angel" style... )

POST-1873: Definitely the S&W #3 or Schofield (Wells Fargo version). Great balance & quick reloads. If it's good enough for the James boys...


Well, gents ( & ladies, of course... ), choose your poison....

Pre-1873 I would choose a Colt 1860 Army, actually four of them, two of them cut down to 3" barrel length.
To heck with reloading during a gunfight!
These would have also served as my back country guns.

Post 1873 I would have chose two S&W Americans in .44 Russian caliber with barrels cut to 4 inches for gunfighting.

For packing in the back country a 7.5" .45 Colt or .44/40 SAA.

1851 Navy is just fine, though a little front heavy for such small grips. The 1860 Army has better balance and handles conical bullets better. Ivory grips for either.

I'd have to stay with Colt after the change to smokeless. A .45 caliber SAA would be nice, but an 1878 new frontier six shooter in .45 would be even better, with a .41 1877 Thunderer carried discreetly, and a Remington .41 Derringer in a vest pocket.

Of course, I'd have to have a 40-60 Lightning rifle and a 12 ga Colt shotgun handy too... maybe a Sharps on the horse for knocking down buffalo or bears.

Pre-1873: 1858 Remington, or even better, a Webley.

Post 1873: A pair of 5.5" Peacemakers, and/or a Webley RIC .450/.476.

Pre-1873: Just to be a little bit different, I'd pack a pair of Colt 3rd Model Dragoon;

Post-1873: I agree, the S&W Mod. 3 Schofield is a convenient, fast reloading gun when being attacked by a bunch of blood-thirsty indians. However, I certainly would have at least one Colt SAA M1873 7.5" and a Winchester 1873 lever-action rifle handy, too, both chambered for the .44 WCF.

I saw it also, in between taking care of kids and enjoyed both the show and the banter between the two brothers. They even managed to work the third brother (Bobby) into the dialogue. Whoever produces this show has a pretty good sense of humor.
